A few ways to save energy this Summer

The Summer is here and boy is it hot, but that doesn't mean that our power bill has to go up. Saving money on your energy bill is actually easier than most people think. Saving energy can be as easy as flipping a switch or pressing a button, resulting in appreciable energy savings and lower energy costs for you and the environment.

They say that electronics account for about 4 percent of the household's energy cost. The bad part is that these electronics are draining 75 percent of that energy while they're off or not in use.  So how do we eliminate wasting this energy? Plug your electronics into a power strip and switch the strip off when you're not using the appliance. With the flip of a switch, you can save about 3 percent off your energy costs. It doesn't seem like much but every little bit helps and starts to add up. We can all save money by being a little more tentative to our routine.

We all have lots of appliances in our homes but the clothes dryers drain some of the most energy. Back in 2001 an audit of energy was done to show usage in U.S. homes. The U.S. Energy Information Administration(E.I.A.) discovered that your dryer alone is about 6 percent of a household's energy costs. Only refrigerators and central air conditioners used more. Line drying your clothes is also an option that you can take to lower your energy bills.

Energy savings is very important for any homeowner. Turn off the electronics and unplug them after use. Always unplug anything after use and yes use the clothes line to dry clothes.

Good luck getting my wife to line dry clothes! Turning off electronics with a power strip is a good idea.

Good tipa.  Every night I unplug anything I can.  Stops extra heat and electric use.

Now that is shocking!

I can't even notice the increase in energy use from using my gas dryer.  I sure notice a change in the winter when I have to use my heater.  The heater is shut off from end of May until the middle of October.  No need for AC in the Seattle are so I don't have to worry about that.  I don't envy you who live in the hot areas of the country.

Kenrick, I've got pretty good control of my electric, and am good about it except for the air conditioning.  I really like it cold.  So, other than that... the bill is acceptable.

It's always a good idea to audit your home for energy and efficiency.  Good post.

HA!  Every $100 not spent on electricity buys 15 boxes of skeet/trap shells.

Or, 28 gallons of auto fuel.

Kenrick, great tips. I think a lot of people don't realize electronic devices draw current even when they are turned off.

I am still considering solar panels on my roof.  Friends have seen an over 80% drop in their electric bill the first month.  But, assuming I do not do that, your tips are great.

Changed my A/C last year. Electric bill is down $100 a month. Bigger expense but much bigger results. And the house is cool. Also run a dehumidifier. Pulls over a gallon of water out everyday. Pretty comfortable at my house even in 90+ temperatures
