Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #50

This story from earlier in the month would shock many folks.  The thought of a pedestrian being killed while trying to cross the street would be alarming in and of itself- but the thought of said pedestrian being hit and/or run over by at least 3 vehicles should be all the more scary.

Sadly, it's not at all surprising to folks around here who have become all but numb to these pedestrian deaths.  The death chronicled here is yet another one on the watch of Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney- and the 50th local death I've written about since I began this series in December of 2011.  Now, that is amazing.

Woman killed during hit-and-run crash on Orange Blossom Trail

June 16, 2013|By Ludmilla Lelis, Orlando Sentinel

A woman was killed during a hit-and-run crash on Orange Blossom Trail in Orange County early this morning, the Florida Highway Patrol.

The woman, who hasn't been identified yet, was trying to cross the busy road, from east to west, not at a crosswalk or an intersection around 3:30 a.m. at 39th Street, the FHP said.

The first driver involved with the hit-and-run crash has been arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, while the FHP is still searching for a second driver who was involved in the hit-and-run.

The pedestrian was first struck by a vehicle driven by Eduardo Grinaire Vicente, 49, of Orlando, the FHP said.

Vicente initially stopped and got out of the car, but then left the scene. He has been arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, the FHP said.

A witness who saw the crash, Kimberly Morgenbesser of Maryland, stopped and opened her door to assist the pedestrian.

However, the door to Morgenbesser's was struck by a maroon Ford Taurus, which fled the scene and ran over the pedestrian, the FHP said.

A third vehicle, driven by 23-year-old Yasmani Fonseca of Orlando, also ran over the pedestrian, but Fonseca stayed at the scene, the FHP said.

In our area moped bikes seen to be a target.  Those that ride are mostly poor or those that has lost their license due to DUI..   Last week a young driver 17 years old while texting ran over one and did not know she had hit the man and dragged him for over 1/4 mile before stopping because she heard a noise under the car.

Very sad story.  That area of OBT and 39th Street is high crime to say the least.  Odds are at 3:30am she was strung out on drugs.  You hate to see stories like this.

Hi, Richard:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  You're treading along the edges of what's become my biggest question with regard to these incidents..."Who's the true victim?"

It's easy to jump to the side of the deceased- especially in the cases where the "crashes" are horrific, yet the fact remains that a great deal of the time the pedestrians are at fault and leave an arguably innocent motorist to live with a death on their minds for years to come.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for gracing my blog with your presence once again:)  OBT, Colonial, John Young, 436/Semoran, Pine Hills Rd, Hiawassee...  I'm probably forgetting one as I sit here, but it's a crazy and telling thing just going off the ones I've listed:  I dare say I've never made it any amount of time on these roads without someone walking out in front of me.

It's a case of the once-unbelievable that's turned all too believable- the 150+ photos I've collected over a relatively short period of time don't lie.

Sad part is that these were avoidable.   Many peds think they can just walk where ever.

Dennis, I swerved last night to avoid someone who was walking in the road.  Were they "legal" in terms of walking against traffic, etc.?  Probably - but it was night time and it was raining; they were wearing dark clothes!

Hi, William:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I can't remember exactly when, but I've switched my views on whom is the victim in these cases...and ceased calling them accidents as well.
