When towns were connected by heavy iron rails…

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Thomaston GA by Richard WeisserThere was a time when nearly every town in America was connected by heavy iron rails.

The railroads provided an essential link for commerce, transportation, and even the mail! The rails were the arteries of prosperity and places that were bypassed eventually withered and disappeared.

However the days of short-lines are local service are nearly over. In many places the rails are long gone and it’s hard to even recognize the overgrown right-of-ways. You might find an occasional artifact here or there, but it doesn’t take long for the railroad bed to fade into obscurity.

So when I pass through a small town and see some old secondary trackage, I always take a photo and document the location.

Because it may not be there on my next visit.

Richard, In our town the rail beds have been abandoned and turned over to the adjoining property owners. It is a little sad to see that part of history go.

I wonder if some of the Putnam Count lines will vanish when the power plant closes in 2015 and coal stops coming on the train.

WE have a few abandoned rail beds also.  Most are converted to bike and atv/snomobile paths.

We have one small local line that stops in town. They allowed the abandoned track to become a bike path, but business is picking up and they are now wishing they had that line back and are talking about taking the path back and re-installing the rail line.

Hi Richard - I'm old enough to remember short lines, even if it was well past their glory days, and the role they played in keeping us connected. The rights-of-way do make nice hike/bike paths, and some of the old wooden bridges are amazing sights, so we haven't lost the last vestiges yet.

You make me want to get in my car, take a drive through the many, many country roads here and soak in the history around me.

Railroads just aren't efficient for spot delivery, but for mass transport to a hub. THey are the most efficient and are only limited by the amount of track available.
