Remember the stories about the old west?
This precious town just west of Durango has all the charm and flavor of those stories.
Rugged terrain, high desert with beauty of mountains and occasional rushing streams combine to create the perfect visuals for western drama.
Mancos itself is a very small town. Many of the antique buildings house the essentials for the residents to avoid excessive shopping trips to Cortez, Dolores or Durango.
Tumble weeds frequently cross the roads as do deer and other Wild West critters.
Stars seem to be brighter as you travel west, and land prices drop appreciably. There are also spectacular mountain views which include "Sleeping Ute". ( it really looks like a sleeping Indian!)
Probably one of the most fun aspects of the general area is that it is easy to visualize cowboys, Indians and even stagecoaches traveling at high rates of speed through the canyons. Imagery is great! Especially when it is a part of your daily life.
Treat yourself to a day trip. There are a myriad of things to do and see, including some incredible art galleries.
