Staying cool without AC in Southern Litchfield County

How on earth can you stay cool in this weather?

melting in these hot tempsMany new homes have central air, others make use of window or wall air conditioning units. There are some homes that just don't have AC. Getting overheated is no laughing matter, stay indoors as much as you can. But without that AC, how can you stay cool when the temps soar to 90+?

A few tips on staying cool in this unbearable heat:

  • During the day, keep those windows, shades, blinds and curtains closed! At night, open the windows up as soon as the temps outside drop to below the house temperature. Pull the cooler air through the house at night with one fan pushing the air in and another pulling it out.
  • Aim a fan at you. Spritzing yourself with cool water while in the path of the fan does help.
  • Take a cold shower!
  • Run cold water on your wrists. Works like a charm.
  • Put a cold washcloth on your neck.
  • Make what I call a personal swamp cooler. Freeze 2 liter bottles of water and rock salt. Use 70% water and 10% salt. Don't overfill the bottles, leave about 20% empty for expansion when freezing. Place them in bowls in front of a fan, you will be surprised at how this will cool you down! You can even refreeze the bottles. Don't forget to put the frozen bottles in a bowl to protect the table from getting wet as the bottles unfreeze!
  • When I lived in Arizona and we didn't have AC, we would hang burlap sacks outside the windows and set up a hose to drip a very slow but steady stream of water at the top. Any wind blowing through the wet sack would would blow in cooler, especially at night.
  • If you are using ceiling fans, make sure they are set for summer and not winter. Otherwise it will defeat the purpose!
  • Drink plenty of cold water. Some places advice 8 oz every hour. If you have kidney problems that much is not recommended!
  • Eat cold meals. Not only does this help you feel cooler, but... saves on turning on the stove or oven!
  • Grilling outside is also a far better option than heating up the kitchen.
  • Keep the lights off.
  • Put your feet in a bucket of cold water. I use this when I am outside with my grandkids, and boy does it help!
  • Wear loose fitting, light colored clothing.

If all else fails, check for public cooling centers, or get to the library or a grocery store!

Staying cool in Southern Litchfield County is no easy feat these days, but using your head and trying a few of the tips above will certainly help. And don't forget our 4 legged friends. Leaving them outside or in a car is a big no no! They need plenty of fresh water and need to be inside during these hot summer days, just like we do.

Or you could always stare at the photo below... it just might help!

I think you are right on with your tips for staying cool!  Great job!

I also like drinking 4 coffee cups of water, first thing in the morning to start the hydration process.  I wait 45 minutes before eating or drinking.

The temps up in Sedona usually get into the 60's or 70's at night, which allows us to turn the air off.  We physically turn the air off and not leave it on automatic and in the am we wait until we feel warm air coming into the house before we close everything and turn the air on.

A lifetime ago, we did a lot of camping at the river in the summer when we were young.  I remember wetting a lot of towels and making a swamp cooler with a hose misting the towel on the front of the fan.  We slept with wet towels on us that dried out in 1 hour in that heat.  It was uncomfortable but we made it through tent camping in 115 degrees!

Andrea, it has been a long time since I had to take a cold shower.  And Spritzing yourself with cool water while in the path of a fan should involve a T-Shirt :)

Sherry, also a lifetime ago we had a cattle ranch in AZ. Much of it was only accessible by horseback and it took a day's ride to get to the top half. We had a log cabin up there with a "fridge". A frame with burlap over it. (we had no electricity other than what we generated at the main houses) We would run a hose from a spring down the hill to the "fridge" and drip water over it. Worked like a charm! It was always in the shade however.

Will, thank you! Staying cool is not always easy.

George, you are too funny!

Pat, yes you do. But you don't for a bucket of cold water to stick your feet in, or just mist yourself. Or better yet, take a trip elsewhere with power and AC!

Hannah, I was at my daughters babysitting when I wrote this. She doesn't like AC, only has it in the boys bedroom. I was a bit on the warm side, to say the least, LOL.

I've been doing most of these tips the last few days.  I don't have AC and my last house had central AC so I'm really missing it!

I love the list. I was waiting to read about putting your feet in a bucket. That's when I knew you'd covered the bases!

That swamp cooler concept is the one that caught my eye the most.

Sharon, I was roasting away at my daughters house watching kids when I wrote this, LOL.

Brad, that is my personal favorite!

Cheryl, the one with the bottles of water and salt is the same concept, and rather on the portable side!

Oh, Pat, I was asleep early, didn't see this. Am checking it out, thanks!

Andrea, I came over from Pat's blog. I have to admit I really enjoyed your post and have done these myself. We grill a lot in the summer and the wet washcloths works wonders if the power goes out...Lucky for us, we have A/C.  But I remember the days when we didn't... Stay cool!

BTW...My daughter's name is Andrea.  Great name! ;)

Have a wonderful weekend!
