Polo in the desert, in the SUMMER?

polo in la quinta during the summerThe polo season is exactly the same as our regular season..in other words, from mid-October through mid-April.  As the season has lengthened here in the Palm Springs Valley, with more and more people choosing to stay longer and longer, so has the polo season.

Eldorado Polo Club shuts down completely.  Now that Goldenvoice owns it and is figuring out how to utilize it for Events etc., the regular polo season will not be changing at that club.

Empire Polo Club, however, has built itself into quite a summer polo facility.  Vicki Owens continues the management of players/fields throughout the entire summer..used to shut down in August, but not any more.  Games are starting right now at 7:30 a.m. and last chukkar is generally over by 10 a.m.  Then the horses are cooled down with baths, and returned to their paddocks.

I have one mare that has a tough time sweating..just like some people do.  She sweats a bit under her saddle, but that's not enough to cool her in the triple digit heat, so I hose her down and have rigged up a fan on one side of her stall.  Took her about 5 minutes to sort that cooling system out!  Amazingly, the ponies bloom in the heat.  Their coats are shiny and sleek, they adjust to the heat just like we do and within a few short weeks of starting their training games (which is what summer polo is!), they are able to recover their breath quickly after a run down the field.

Several of my real estate clients showed up yesterday to watch the practices and had such a good time.  Hot, yes, but that early, it's still a great way to enjoy the beauty of our desert and get to know a local favorite..polo in the desert!  Land and equestrian estates are moving again.  Multiple equestrian land in the palm springs valleyclosings the past 6 months of local date farms, vacant land and parcels with homes/barns on them.  The East Valley is prime for horse activities!
