Monsoon Season Surprise

Well, it is that time of year here in Surprise AZ. We have had the heat and now we have the humidity building on top of that.  You look to the North and the East and you see big billowy clouds gathering on the horizon.  You know what that means - the monsoon season is approaching quickly.

I want my family - and yours - to be best prepared.  Here are just a few tips.

Driving

 - Slow down.  The first couple of storms make the roads slippery, as oil and other automotive fluids rise and cause the roads to be slippery.

 - If lights at intersections are not working, treat it as a four way stop.

 - Do not cross flooded roads.  Even shallow water can sweep your car away and put your life in danger. If the road is posted not to cross when flooded, you may also get a ticket for the "Stupid Motorist Law".

 - If blowing dust is an issue and visibility is low, pull off to the right side of the road as much as possible, turn your engine off, stay inside your vehicle and do not depress the break peddle.  This will allow you to stay out of the way of traffic and no one will get behind you thinking you are still driving.

Home

 - Make sure batteries are replaced and flashlights are functioning in case of a power outage.

 - Turn off all unnecessary power equipment.  If the power goes out, this will reduce the extra draw for power once it does come back on.

 - If winds are  heavy, try to stay away from windows in case of blowing debris.

 - In case of a power outage, limit the number of times you open your refrigerator and freezer so that the cold air keeps your food from spoiling.

 - Keep your doors and windows closed.  If the power goes out and you don't have air conditioning, this will keep some of the cool air from escaping.

Stay indoors as much as possible, as lightning is a factor in the monsoon storms and can be dangerous.  If you do get caught outside, seek shelter.

Just following a few simple items can keep you and your family safe during the monsoon season that hits this time of year through September here.
