Cincinnati Among Fittest Metro Areas                          girl running in Park

According to an analysis of the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the nation, Cincinnati was ranked 13th most healthy and fittest city in the US.  The American College of Sports Medicine released its American Fitness Index based upon a number of health behaviors.

Analyzed were issues such as smoking, exercise, obesity rates, chronic health problems and access to health care.  These behaviors were linked up with environmental factors such as availability of parks, recreational facilities, walking trails, and farmer's markets.

Minneapolis, ranked number one, spends double the money on parks per capita as some other cities.  When asked how cities can improve their rankings, Walt Thompson, chairman of the advisory board that created the index suggested smoking bans not only in buildings, but in all public places such as parks and outdoor eating areas of restaurants.  Additionally, he recommended required physical education for kids through high school.
