Selling Real Estate On Twitter

Selling real estate on Twitter, and more to the point, how to sell real estate on Twitter is something I am very passionate about.  Next to people tweeting coupons all day long, real estate agents are the absolute worst and least effective social media users as a group.  I will take this step by step and share the things which I have had success with over the years as well as some ideas and expertise that I have learned from others along the way.

Social media advertising is quite different from the way advertising has historically been done.  Social media advertising is actually best described as social media marketing, because it is an "inbound" focus.  This means that it is based on attracting your clients and customers by valuable content and contribution.  According to HubSpot, inbound marketing works best for businesses dealing with "high dollar values, long research cycles and knowledge-based products. In these areas prospects are more likely to get informed and hire someone who demonstrates expertise".  Holy crap!  That sounds like real estate to me...

In a previous article, Social Media Marketing For Real Estate Agents, I shared some ideas about content and engagement.  This series of blog posts, Selling Real Estate On Twitter, is going to address pretty much everything.

The first thing you need to do is choose a username, or Twitter handle.  It will look like this @KevinRay (which is mine).  If your name (@FirstLast like mine) is available, you better use it.  In fact I forbid you to use anything else.  I will repeat myself here, if your name is available you absolutely positively MUST use it!  Resist the urge to use something super awesome that sounds like a good idea to you (sarcasm in case you missed it) like @KevinSellsHouses.

Next thing you need it a profile pic.  Please please please do not use the egg that Twitter defaults to.  Many of the more active Twitter users will not follow or engage anybody who hasn't taken the time to upload a photo.  With that said, upload a photo of you, not your logo and not a house or a for sale sign or anything else!  Your profile pic needs to be your face.  Your profile pic is what people see when they engage with you and they don't want to engage a for sale sign.

Now you are asking "but Kevin, how in the world am I ever going to end up selling real estate on Twitter if my name isn't @KevinSellsHouses and my profile picture isn't a for sale sign?"  Well, I'm glad you asked.  The next thing you do is fill out your bio.  Mention in your bio that you are a person who works as a real estate agent.  Downplay it though, you just want people to know that's what you do.  Most of your profile info should be more personal.  Give people a glimpse into who you are, let your personality show.
