A Single Women, Buying My First Home

By
Real Estate Agent with Star Real Estate South County

In 1994, I was a secretary for a real estate investment firm, living by myself in a tiny apartment. My car was on its last legs and I was sitting in a finance class learning about different ways to finance a home purchase. It was a requirement to renew my real estate license, otherwise I wouldn't have been there. I was daydreaming about the new car I was planning to buy when something about adjustable rate mortgages caught my attention. I started doing the math and realized that a home of my own just might be in reach. I checked my calculations with one of the real estate analysts at work the next day and with a little encouragement, found myself sitting in a Realtor's office that weekend.

I was scared to death, a single woman, buying my first home, in Orange County no less. I couldn't qualify for the loan on my own, so I called my mom and told her about the plan my Realtor and I had worked out. I would keep a little money in savings in case I got into trouble, and when interest rates went down I'd refinance and take her off the loan. Yes, she would co-sign on the loan.

The only thing I could afford was a cute little condo in Laguna Niguel, CA but it was perfect! So I got my car fixed, signed the purchase agreement and went through the escrow process. Yes, it was scary, but with the guidance of a good Realtor, my dream of owning my own home became a reality.

I will always remember watching the news a few days before escrow closed; O.J. was doing his infamous slow-speed chase up the 405. I could have cared less. I would own my first home in a matter of days. That was far more important to me.

Now, almost 15 years later I'm in a larger, single family home with a yard for my dogs, and I've never looked back.  I encourage single women everywhere to find a good Realtor and make your dream of homeownership a reality.  You'll be glad you did.

Hi Rose, That is excellent advise.  I think, if I remember correctly, that single women make up the fastest growing group of home buyers.  Good for you.  And...I  see you are fairly new to Active Rain.  WELCOME.  It is a wonderful place to be.  To get to start a network of other realtors who you can 'connect' to, just click on 'subscribe to my blog' above their photo when you read their blog.  I will subscribe to you.  Have fun.

Hi Rose:  What an excellent post, and what an inspiration for all single women who only dream about owning their very own home.  I am sure it was a scary time for you, but it sounds like you came through it with flying colors.  How great for you !  Thanks for sharing.

Kay, Thanks for your comment and your advice.  I'll start subscribing to other blogs.  I subscribed to AR some time ago, but couldn't figure it out and the print on the screen is so tiny, it's very hard on my eyes.  Do you know how to make the type larger?

Karen, yes it was a very scary time which is why I shared it.  My hope is to inspire other single women to take the plung.

I was able to buy a house when the market was bad in 1996.  Houses were undervalued and it was the BEST decision I ever made.  Although houses have their challenges, my Siberians and Cattle dog mix LOVE the yard.  Congrats on your purchase. I am single and living in a house and although the maintenance is a pain - having the room for the dogs is WONDERFUL. Not that they control my life....nooooooooo way! (If you believe that I'll sell you the Brooklyn Bridge.)

Buying a home of any type is usually  good thing.  I bought my first on under similar circumstances but mine got owner financed. It wasn't much but I loved it, fixed it, and sold it for a nice profit.

Exactly the same happened to me.  I did not know I could buy a house as a single woman.  But this was before I was licenced.  Once I did, I felt like I could take on the world.

Yes,  we all deserve a home,  single or not.    Good for us.   I have owned 3 homes now  as a single woman (between marriage) and never had any problems,  but it did strike me funny that the documents always read my name,  then "single" typed right after it.

I'm wondering what you do, if anything, to market to single women.  I had a lady come into one of my open houses this weekend, she was in the process of divorce and not sure if she should buy something or not.  I told her about buying my 1st house (a condo actually) and what a great feeling it was and she really perked up.  Of course, she's already working with an agent, in another city but asked for my card.  I gave it to her with the caveat that I don't step on other Realtors' toes, but if it just isn't working out with the other agent, go ahead & call me.

Any ideas on marketing to the single population is appreciated.
