Achieving The Impossible... A Realtor's Quest For Triathlon Gold

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Properties

My name is Sal Poliandro. I am a full-time Realtor with my wife in the Ridgewood Real Estate Market. About a year ago I weighed 260 pounds. I was not happy with how my body was, enough was enough. My friend Rob Parker completed a "mini" triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 20 mile bike ride & 5 mile run) the summer before and I was interested in doing it also. I told him and a bunch of other people. Now I will complete the triathlon this coming June 17. I have lost about 35 pounds so far. My wife Dawn & I decided to join the Wyckoff YMCA. Like everyone else this time of year, I am at the gym every day. Swimming, Biking & Running. Swimming, Biking & Running. Swimming, Biking & Running. You get the idea. People have been kind enough to tell me how stupid this idea is. Fortunately some of these same people told me that Real Estate was a bad idea for a career as well. Has anyone else run in to these "border bullies" (taken from a book I just read called the Dream Giver)?

So here are my discussion questions.

Has anyone done anything that the rest of the world thought was foolish?

Anybody completed a triathlon? I'm looking for encouragement.

This is my first blog. How did I do?

Sal,

You did good on your first blog.  Make yourself at home and enjoy the tib bits of good information you get from the posts that you will find here.  Every now and then, send out some words of wisdom for us.

Something foolish, started diving, got seriously hooked, began diving in caves, now permanetly hooked.

Never tried a triathlon.  No matter how it turns out though, you have already won simply by getting yourself into better shape.  Pat yourself on the back.

Thanks Gary,

I wasn't sure if anybody was going to see it. I also posted my first blog listing. Check it out and tell me what you think.

Hi Sal, congratulations!  It'd be great to hear how you're progressing and lessons you might apply to real estate once in a while on your blog.

You did something great: you set a goal, you told other people about it, you're in the process of making it happen, and you're looking for the support you need to push it past the goal line.

Bravo!

Sal,

I ran 5 triathlons last year and that was my first season.  When you tell them you are doing a triathlon, they look at you like you are a little crazy.  But when you finish one, they look at you with a little bit of awe.  It's really cool.  If you are a good swimmer you should have no problem.  I hyperventilated in my first open water swim.  I backstroked the whole way.  Now its easy to for me to swim 2 miles.  Good Luck.

Thanks Tony,

I'm hoping not to hyperventilate when I swim. I'm really making some headway in my real estate career as well. It's not the result that matters, but the activities that we do every day that make us successful. Or as Tom Hopkins puts it Success is the continuous journey towards the achievement of pre-determined worthwhile goals. Press on!

Sal,

There you go!  Congratulations on your very first blog --- it's good!

You asked: Has anyone done anything that the rest of the world thought was foolish?

My answer:  Yep, back in 1990 when my husband and I started Magnetic Post Production...TV facilities back then were competing with the likes of Unitel, Editel, PostPerfect, MTI and let's not forget the husband/wife team at Devlin (the list goes on and on)... that was a long time ago and every one of the BIG companies mentioned here have since gone out of business.  Magnetic is still around, still going strong even though the wife (that's me) took a side track into Real Estate (I got lots of comments about that decision too).  Do what you love!  And in our case, do what you love with people you love!

Update... still going to the gym and swimming, biking & running. These are the dog days of training. No more excitement from having decided to compete and the race is 3 and a half months away. Keep plugging... One Day at a time. (Much like a successful career in Real Estate)

Hi Sal,

Three and a half more months? You've going to be in excellent shape! Thank goodness you gave yourself more time than I did for my first half-marathon. I decided I wanted to run and jumped into the Pacific Shoreline race at just two months (not the best stategy!)

Sal!  Nice job buddy!  I raced triathlon professionally for 4 years and am now shifting all that energy to my real estate biz.  If you ever need triathlon advice, feel free to send me a message.  I love to help people that finally decide to take charge and make a change like you have.  Anything is possible my friend!

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for the encouragement. Since the post, I have completed 3 mini triathlons. Number 4 is June 18, 2011. Each year it seems to get harder :) Perserverance is the name of my triathlon game.
