Does Your Current Insurance Policy Cover Your Dog?

Wow..I learned something in our sales meeting this week from Ted Heaton with State Farm Insurance. Did you know your policy could be immediately cancelled or not renewed if your insurance company is not aware you own a “dangerous” dog?

What is a dangerous dog?

According to most insurance companies the following are the most common “Dangerous Breeds” or “Blacklisted Breeds”:

1. Pit bulls & Staffordshire Terriers

2.Doberman Pinchers

3. Rottweilers

4. Chows

5. Great Danes

6. Presa Canarios

7. Akitas

8. Alaskan Malamutes

9. German Shepherds

10. Siberian Huskies

11. Wolf-hybrids

Or a mix of any of the above

If you’ve been insured with the same insurance company for years, don’t assume your policy includes coverage for your dog(s). Insurance companies regularly modify what their policy will cover (and not cover). Your company may not know you have a “dangerous” dog.

Ted explained they can help you with a policy if your dog falls into the following categories:

Dangerous

Vicious

Potentially dangerous

Potentially dangerous

A public nuisance

A policy can even cover when you are away from the house which might be a good thing if your dog(s) falls into any of these categories.

Rules on which dogs an insurance company will cover and which they won’t, will vary from company to company. Some companies will cover almost any dog. But as a general rule, insurance companies tend to resist covering the above 11 types of dogs or any mix of these breeds. It’s best to do your research on insurance before making a decision on acquiring a dog(s). Better to be safe than sorry!

All insurance companies encourage responsible behavior and caution around dogs. Might be time to check your current insurance policy to see if your dog(s) is covered!
