The Mental Diet- You Are What You Eat!
You are what you eat! I would contend that more importantly...you are what you think! Garbage In ...garbage out. That started as a computer programming analogy, it quickly became co-opted by nutrition and fitness gurus extolling the virtues of eating properly and fueling our bodies with the right stuff.(an apple a day...not a twinkie...right!) Many experts in the field of performance, psychology
and self help contend that what you allow to fuel your mind: negative self talk, criticism, and even the news plays an important part in our success and happiness. I recently attended a training...more of a boot camp conditioning event. Instead of tech tips and strategies, we spent a majority of the first two sessions getting our head in the game with working on our mindset... FIRST! I now follow a Mental Diet: I am developing habits that are conducive to improving the thoughts, attitudes and self defeating garbage we allow in our heads. Often times we are our own worst critic and enemy in regards to this. Here are a few tips to help you stave off the negative and fill your brain with positive, healthy and productive thoughts to help lead and focus on getting more of the things you want in your life, career and personal relationships.
My Mental Diet:
Be Grateful- every day or every evening think of something you are truly grateful for. Try this for a month...I even posted it everyday on my Facebook page. once you get the biggies out of the way you'll dial it down and think about and change your perspective about all the blessings you have.
Meditation and Affirmations- I admit I haven't fully embraces regular consistent affirmations yet. (Hey. I am working on it.) But I take 15 minutes daily to meditate, clear my mind to the possibilities the day and all the good I will accomplish. Try The 21 Day Meditation Challenge with Deepak Chopra. It is a great beginners introduction. I love it.
Think Positively- As human beings our thoughts naturally go negative. This helps fuel fear, self-doubt, procrastination worry and the lower self esteem. You can't control that first thought that pops into your head. However, you have complete control on how you reactive and where your mind goes from there. This may be hard at first . Being positive and asking yourself powerful possibility questions allows you to change your state and see things from your new default perspective.
Exercise your Body: We all know we should exercise. It will make our bodies stronger, look and feel better and maybe developing these good habits might make us live longer. Did you know it can help your brain too. Doctors have long espoused exercise and physical activity as a treatment for depression and other mood ailments. Did you know it can help you maintain a healthy and positive mindset as well.
Give these techniques a try and enjoy the resources available to you. Have a Great Week!
