The Five Element theory is another way to explain the qi in our homes and businesses. It is a way to describe the relationship between the different stars, showing how one will help or hurt the other if given a chance.

To read the diagram, start at metal and go clockwise.  Metal produces water, water produces wood, wood produces fire, fire produces earth, and earth produces metal.  Next, look clockwise, again starting with metal, and go across an arm of the star.  Metal controls wood, wood controls earth, earth controls water, water controls fire, and fire controls metal.  If you go counterclockwise you have the reduction cycle.  Metal reduces earth, earth reduces fire, fire reduces wood, wood reduces water and water reduces metal.

What? How does metal "produce" water? And how does water "produce" wood? Etc., etc. God "produced" everything. I understand some basic concepts of Fung Shui, but I'm completely lost with this one.

It's just a way of describing qi.  Metal when heated melts and looks like water...Water produces wood by simply giving it water...wood produces fire by being fuel...fire produces earth with ash...and earth produces metal.

It's not expected to be taken literally.  It's just the best they could come up with to describe the elemental relationship.  Remember, Feng Shui was developed a few thousand years ago...now we're finally pulling out secrets...finding which work and which don't...and bringing it all out into the open.  Until recently not even the Chinese people were allowed to know the true feng shui.  Sure, they were given little bits and pieces, but just enough to keep them happy.  Never the whole package.  Now, there are so many ways the Feng Shui masters can train their students, it's not necessary anymore to walk for 20 years with a master before he tells you how to draw a chart on a house.

But, we still haven't come up with a better explanation of the behavior of certain types of qi.  For now, this will have to do.
