Smith Mountain Lake recently welcomed its own fixture in one of the nation’s fastest growing trends: a microbrewery. Sunken City Brewing Company, located in the town of Westlake, made its official debut in May and has been “hopping” ever since. Owner Jerome Parnell had established its signature brew, Dam Lager three years ago with a Roanoke microbrewery, hoping and planning even then to establish a place of his own in his hometown.
The brewery is primarily a beer manufacturer producing Dam Lager, Red Clay IPA and soon-to-be added concoctions created in craft brewing style. The beer is distributed to nearby cities such as Roanoke, Lynchburg and Danville and northern North Carolina. Parnell expects to continue to expand into Virginia and surrounding states. A tap room and beer garden are open to the public Wednesday through Sunday for beer tasting and weekly live music and food truck special events. Sunken City Brewery is just one more reason Smith Mountain Lake is a wonderful place to visit and live.
