How to Lower Electricity Costs

View the Rates for your Area

With soaring summer temperatures comes soaring electrical bills. It's literally costing us a fortune to stay cool. However, with the deregulation of the utility companies, there are several markets offering competitive rates and the possibility for consumers to choose from various companies. So, the question that comes to mind is how to lower electricity costs and how do I get started saving money.

First thing's first. Find out if your state is deregulated. In other words, find out if you have the ability to choose your energy company. See if there are discounted rates for your area.

Secondly, make sure the company you choose has an A+ Rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Also, see if your new energy company offers perks such a Travel Rewards. Yep, you heard me right...the landscape of utility companies is changing and to be competitive they will need to offer the customer something to keep them loyal such as a rewards program with free travel, perks and incentives.

Some companies have a referral program where you can earn free electricity. For example, one such company (Ambit Energy) gives you free electricity for referring 15 customers.

How to Lower Electricity Costs is a cinch due to energy deregulation. If it hasn't happen in your state yet, it'll be coming soon.

Stay cool this summer, save money and have fun!

Read the fine print when changing electric companies, many use low teaser rates and then apply a much higher rather afterwards this loosing any savings.

Thanks David for your feedback.

A lot of times electric companies have variable and fixed rates.  Make sure there are no costs or fees to change and opt for the conservative fixed rate plan. Usually, you can lock in a rate for 6 to 12 months. Always compare your kilowatt hour current rate to the rate of the new company and like David said read the fine print. Here's a link an A+ BBB accredited electric retailer to lower electricity costs that doesn't charge a fee to change.

Charles in addition to finding alternatives, if available, home owners should also look into other ways to make their homes energy efficient and reduce the amount of energy consumed.
