The Social Media Ass, Don't Be 'That Guy'

Services for Real Estate Pros with ActiveRain

Oops, How Did That Happen?

Social media mess-ups are not limited to celebrities. For every Anthony Weiner or Alec Baldwin story that blows up because of a social media misstep, there are numerous instances of everyday people making similar mistakes we never hear about...but that doesn't make them any less offensive.

(OK, most of us have never been this offensive...but I still see some real head scratchers from real estate professionals every day)

We certainly don't have to tell you that sending inappropriate pictures of yourself, or posting homophobic rants on your twitter account won't be the best use of your social media time, but are there other landmines and pitfalls you can avoid?

There sure are. And one of the most frightening things about social media is you might not even realize you are doing anything wrong until it's too late. It may have seemed like a great idea at the time to send an open house invite to everyone you've circled up on Google+ (probably because you never created different circles, instead clumping everyone into one circle)...but was it really worth losing your ability to share content with half of your potential audience because they decided to mute you and no longer receive your notifications?

Let's Talk about It

In our Webinar on Wednesday July 24th at 10am Pacific Time (1pm Eastern) I'll be hosting Jeff Lobb, Exit Realty VP of Technology and Innovation to talk social media etiquette and best practices.

The thing about social media is there isn't an exact science on how to use it. It's more of a 'what are you comfortable with' kind of thing. Some of you may never think about sharing stuff about your kids while others freely share more than you ever would. And this might lead to some fun interactions between Jeff and me. Jeff has some ideas for you based on what he's seen in the industry and after chatting with him about the presentation, I'm not sure I agree with everything he has to say.

My goal on this call is to be the contrarian, and for Jeff and I to have some real conversations about the advice being dispensed (Do you hear that Jeff Lobb? I plan on challenging you on a few of these tips, so be ready my friend). We'll share some mistakes we see agents making on a daily basis and talk about ways that they may have acheived their goal in a more meaningful way.

We would love to have you join us...who knows, I might even share one or two of my own social media mistakes from over the years...

The Last Names You'll Ever Need in Real Estate

Good morning Bob - this seminar sounds like something many of us have use for! I often post open house announcements, etc, to everyone in my circles, but I guess there are pretty valuable reasons not to. Selective use of social media is the more effective way of posting.

Okay, Bob. I'm in. I know that I might be guilty of a few inappropriate postings here and there. Thankfully nothing that would put me in the same class as Weiner or, at least I don't think so! I guess we'll see.

Bob - The thing about social media, is that although there are some basic rules, each platform seems to have some of its own.

Seems like everyone has a different opinion.

Don't post religion or politics you might offend someone and they will drop you. If posting something offends them so deeply they 'unfriend' you. How much of a friend were they? (Just one easy example)

It seems like everyone needs some type of direction when it comes to social media. I know we are looked at differently on sites like these because we are professionals. This webinar sounds great!

Bob,  sounds like this is going to be a great webinar.  Social media is playing a ever increasing part in ours lives and business. A lot of people do not understand that most posts are permanent and can be viewed by almost anyone. I have seen posts that make me feel embarrassed and I am not even the person who wrote them. Looking forward to the replay.

How very topical and wish I could have attended!  Listened to a consumer panel at Inman earlier this month in San Francisco - the consensus was that consistent posts only about real estate were dull and eliminated from their newsfeeds.  Even from clients who absolutely LOVED their agent - they just couldn't take the open house, or new listing, or the worst one.... "I'll be at blah-blah blah open house until blah-blah-blah - stop by and see me".  I mean it isn't like your Dentist is blathering on about how many extractions and root canals he's done in a day, is he?  YIKES!

You always have to remember, that anyone can see what you post.  Even if limited to friends, the friends may have others who may see it.

I did catch a half hour this am. Bottom line...the direction and topics were spot on and if many participated...then many have that much more info ;)

Some days I cannot believe that some real estate brokers and salespeople would be comfortable having not only family and friends viewing their posts but their Clients, what must their Clients think!
