Feng Shui Fitness: The back of my knees hurt? Why?

Question, if I am doing leg exercises and the back of my knees are hurting the next day does that mean the weight is too heavy?  Its when I do lunges and squats with a 20 lb barbell....Doesn't seem like 20 lbs would be too much for me since I have been strength training for like a month now tho....

Answer: There could be various factors so really pay attention.  20lbs can be a lot when you are using no supportive equipment.  Be sure you posture is on key and that your knees are not going passed your toes.  If they are, that in it's self can lead to improper lifting which = injury.

Try squatting with out the weight, take notice of your positioning when squatting down and coming back up.  The only muscles that should feel resistance are your hams, glutes, quads and calfs.  If the back of your knees are feeling pressure or pain then the positioning is off or it's too much weight or it could be both.

You can use the "smith machine" which will act as a spotter.  When ready to increase the weights, only due so by 5lbs or 10lbs. I would recommend 5 to be safe.  But to start, I would recommend trying the Smith Machine without weight and once in proper form your own body weight should be enough. Keep a consistent tempo and squeeze the muscles mentioned when pushing up (positive) and coming down (negative).  The negative movement is when you build muscles so always have control.

Laura- years ago when I was working out at Gold's Gym, i would get a trainer every so often just to make sure I was working with the weights and dong the exercises the correct way.  Glad I did.

Hey Kathy, it's so important to understand the proper movements and key techniques when you first start working out because that will stay with you as you progress.  Glad you did that :)

It's so important being in the right position....who wants to go through all the sweat and pain of exercise if they are hurting themselves instead of helping?

Laura, it has always been my contention that proper form trumps weight every time.
