Waterbury Reservoir

Waterbury Reservoir is part of Mount Mansfield State Forest and is the ninth largest body of water in Vermont.  It was created in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corp as a flood control project to protect towns along the Winooski River Valley.

The reservoir has a surface area of 850 acres and has a maximum depth of 100 feet.  The designed flood control capacity of Waterbury Reservoir is approximately 9 billion gallons - that's a lot of zeroes! Can you imagine 9,000,000,000 gallons of water?  If not, then come over and check it out to see for yourself.

Enjoy kayaking, swimming, taking a hike or picnicking at the 22 picnic sites with tables and hibachis.  There is a trailer boat ramp, handicap accessible fishing platform, restrooms and plenty of parking.  Cold Hollow Cider Mill is nearby so pick up some apple cider donuts to enjoy with your day out on the water :)

I have kayaked the reservoir plenty of times and it is always very enjoyable.  It doesn't generally get too windy and is generally not as choppy as the lake.  I have seen bald eagles flying overhead.  Many people like to toss up a tent and camp at various spots around the reservoir.  I would love to do that some time!

Waterbury Reservoir is located at 177 Reservoir Road in Waterbury Center, Vermont.  It is about a quarter mile off of Route 100, not far from Shaw's Supermarket.  The park phone number is (802) 244-1226.  It is officially open from 10 a.m. through dusk Memorial Day through Labor Day.  For those of you who don't mind not following rules, it is easy to park outside and walk around the gate other times :)

Many of these pictures were taken one day in April where we skied in the morning and kayaked in the afternoon.  Vermont is such a wonderful state!

Hi Lisa,

These are great pictures and I am so jealous as I want to start going kayaking at the beach monthly but do not want to rent. The background in your pictures is spectacular.

Joe - Glad you could get out and enjoy kayaking your pond, sounds peaceful :)

Patricia - You are always so complimentary, thank you!

Rebecca - Come visit!  You have a place to stay :)

Myrl - It is stunning here.  The last few nights I have sat out just looking at the moon. No light pollution, no clouds.  It was absolutely breathtaking!

Kristin - You can often find used kayaks that stores selling new ones take as trade-ins, or get a used one from Craig's List or a local kayak club.  Once you own one, you will want to use it all the time and what better way to relax and let the tensions of the day ease out than to enjoy a tranquil night out on the water ... or a choppy one if you are in an adventurous mood!  I would kayak a few times a week if I could.  Sunsets and under the stars and moon are the best. You absolutely can't beat it.  Can you tell that I love it? :) !!!

Lisa, unbelievable the lake is empty!    Such beauty, one would think it is packed.   Is it warm enough to be on the lake with swimwear?   Looks like you have a coat on.
