I've had buyers ask me "have you ever seen a haunted house?" Well, funny that you ask, I respond, as I remembered the day my tenant called me frantically.
She said she needed to talk right away. So, I got in the car and headed right over.
When I got there, she immediately started with 'I have been afraid to tell you this because I knew you would think I am crazy!' I couldn't imagine what she had to say.
'Well, she continued, 'your house is haunted. You have ghosts here!'
I was sure that I hadn't heard her correctly. "What?"
"Your house is haunted." She went on to say that the house had ghosts in it since December. It started with Christmas tree ornaments flying off the tree and across the room. Then, pictures would fly off the walls and across the room. She said she heard voices in the back bedroom, a man, woman and a little boy named John. She said the dog would walk down the hall and yelp, and then kick his legs back, like he was being grabbed. The 'ghosts" had also grabbed her and her daughters by their hair, yanking them backwards.
She said she and her daughters had been choked in their sleep at night, waking up, gasping for breath. It had happened on several occasions.
I sat and listened intently, taking every word in, trying to wrap my head around what she was telling me. I didn't know what to think or how to react.
A haunted house? This was just a plain ordinary house, in a plain ordinary area.
We had owned the house for over eight years and had rented to six different tenants. Between tenants we would go in and clean and paint. We spent plenty of time in the house. If there was a ghost, we would have seen it or heard it, right? I had never heard voices or seen ghosts, and none of the other tenants had mentioned anything unusual.
She went on to say that she had a company come to see if there were ghosts present in the house. They said they heard voices and said there were ghosts. She also said that after doing extensive research she found newspaper articles that there had been a murder, suicide in the house in the 1960's. A man killed his wife in the master bedroom and then killed himself. The tenant said that she heard voices in the master bedroom, an angry man yelling 'get out'.
The man and woman left behind a young son named John. The tenant said she kept hearing someone calling the name John. And, the man that I purchased the house from was named John and so was his father.
The tenant reminded me that her lease was up in a couple of months and she asked if she could move. She said, "I am afraid for my daughter's life." Judging by the look in her eyes and the tone of her voice, I knew she was serious. She was scared.
The tenant moved and I wished her luck wherever she was going. A new tenant has been in the house for nearly a year and a half and there have been no reports of anything out of the ordinary.
I have never seen a ghost. I don't know if they exist. I've never had any experience with a poltergeist. Is there such a thing?
I still don't know what to make of the situation.
