Online lead sources vs. self advertising

Why do some people choose to pay high amounts per lead from an online company vs. putting that large amount towards pay-per-clicks, website promotion, etc?

My thought is that some people want lead sources because it is an automatic "Lead" that they know they can get quickly vs. the unknown factor of paying money first then waiting for a possible "Lead".  I understand the benefits of both, but I want to know what has been working for you?  Being a former LO, my taste for online leads from companies scare me.   I've seen alot of ugly companies sending me a "Lead"

Respond with your thoughts, I'd like to know what you think.

When I started in The Business (this is my 3rd year) I researched and then tried a few of the Lead websites. It was a total waste of money! Yes, I got "leads" but not from any serious customers. The leads from my enhanced listings on Realtor.com on the other hand are for the most part serious inquiries.
