To Demo or not to Demo | Bathroom Renovation

How often do you do a demo (demolition) in the home you are actually living in and stay in it as it progresses?  I bathroom renovationuse to do this all the time in my two prior RI real estate homes but I was younger and renovations didn't bother me as much as they do now.  Making a decision to demolish my main bathroom has been a year in my head.  I was tired of looking at the floor to ceiling roses in the tile that the former owner did to 'enhance' the space...ughh!  Was I willing to give up vacations or a new car purchase to do it now?  Yes, as you can see the bathroom renovation demo is underway.

We are always good as real estate agents about guiding buyers on what they can do to 'take down this wall', 'add this space', 'enlarge this space' or update the bathroom but it does take some grit.  There are bound to be missteps to handle, contractors to call back, and online stores who just can not seem to get an unbroken light fixture shipped right (boy, do I appreciate walk in stores better!).

It is good to demo once every several years some house room as a real estate agent...the inconveniences and joys of the process should be front and center on our minds.  I look forward to my new bath but will remember the process oh so much more vividly as I guide my clients in the future.  To Demo or not to Demo | Bathroom Renovation.

Ginny: You will have to post photos when your new bathroom is complete.  I went through a kitchen and bathroom demo a few years ago...may tackle another room in the winter or early spring.

That's definitely something people should think about before launching into it, Ginny.  I have one in that condition right now.

Ginny, I have added an enlarged tiled shower and granite tops in my bath and living with the mess is the worst part. The work always takes longer to complete and someone doesn't show up like they should and delays it further. But the end result was worth it. The finished product is just right.

Hi Ginny,

I totally agree, DEMO IT. I had my last inspection where the Master bath was in need of the same thing. But at least the walls were still in tack. LOL

Have a good Sunday in North Kingstown.

Best, Clint McKie

Ginny, That was a tough choice, especially for the main bathroom but I like the fully demo. You never know what you are going to find behind those walls, especially depending upon the age of your home. Perhaps if the pipes are old, they should all be replaced too.  Good luck and we are looking forward to the work in progress photos.

Hi all, and I am excited about the end result although the electrician put the boxes at wrong levels...oh, so it goes...bringing up my laundry to the first 2 sets of washer and dryer for me now!  the house was totally gutted by the former owners and enlarged in 1993 so we didn't find anything wrong in the walls...but a pipe was broken by the plumbing crew and water was coming into my basement yesterday which was quickly it goes.  thanks

Ginny, You took the plunge into bathroom renovation. In our house we decided to take up old ceramic tile floors and put down Travertine tile. Those were some long days, late evenings, and an aching back. We are surely glad that we took the plunge. I know you will be pleased with your bathroom makeover, and can't wait to see it finished!

Ginny.....good luck. I'd like to do a total bathroom renovation but I think I need to wait until my girls are out of the house. I don't think we could be down to one bathroom with three teenage girls in the house! Can't wait to see the after photos.

Ginny, We've completely remodeled both our baths in the last 7-8 years.  We tear it down to the studs and replace the subfloor, then the pros come in and do the plumbing and tile work to make it the way we want.  Huge difference in the appearance of them when they're done.

Well it is good to hear all the success stories to cheer me on...I know I will love it...i was obsessing about the mirror and brought 2 son told me he'll make the frame and wait and get a sized one that i am comfortable with at the end.  Son did the demo since he's a finished carpenter but doesn't have time to fit me in until later for building an end cabinet i want...he has been a big help actually.  Pics will come...

Ginny, it's good therapy to bust something up once in a while.  A sawzall, wonder bar and an 8lb. sledge works nicely.  Okay, a ten pounder, if you must!

Ginny the older I get the less inconvenience I am willing to put up with.  Demo away but I would be some place I did not have to deal with it :)

I remember my last master bathroom remodel ... it took a few months but it was GREAT once it was completed ... then you kind of forget about the intrusion of workers, the dust everywhere, etc.
