Folks coming to Maine from other parts of the country often get a confused look on their faces when locals refer to L.A. Yes, there is an L.A. here. We are referring to the combined towns of Lewiston and Auburn. Separated by the Androscoggin river, these sister cities function as the 2nd largest metropolitan area in the state and are often simply called L/A. ...mainly because Lewiston-Auburn just doesn't roll of the tongue that easily.
Of course, there are other reasons why people from away may think we are geographically challenged here in Maine. For example, "Downeast" Maine is really UP on the coast, "Central Maine" isn't really in the center, and you will often hear northern Maine referred to simply as "The County." However, most visitors seem to get the hang of it quickly. Pretty soon you'll be talking about going "upta camp," and referring to everything as just "down the road," even though "you can't get theyah from heyah."
