Sometimes the waves do kick up a bit here in Hawaii, even on the Waikiki side, so where to go on a hot summer's day?
ALA MOANA BEACH PARK, HONOLULU, HAWAII
Those who live in Honolulu tend to stay out of Waikiki when it comes to going to the beach. Mostly, because parking is tough and it's quite a hike to the beach.
Not so at Ala Moana Beach Park.
There is lots of FREE parking, and it's just across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center in case you want to load up on picnic items at the last minute.
Ala Moana Beach Park is 76 acres of mostly lawn shaded by large trees under which families gather for picnics. Which also means that the beach itself does not get crowded. As you can see on the photos, even though the park itself was pretty full, the beach was not.
And the breakwater stops the larger swells from washing out the beach, which stays protected for the little ones to make sand castles. And for people like me, there is excellent swimming without needing to dodge various floating watertoys.
Plus, I just love the views from there, like an unobstructed view of Diamond Head.
