
NASA launches on July 29, 1958. I recently wrote a blog about the anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the anniversary of Neil Armstrong's famous quote as he stepped down onto the surface of the moon. While I was researching those details, I realized there would be another day to celebrate. Today is that day.
On July 29, 1955, then President Dwight D. Eisenhower is the National Aeronautics and Space Act National Aeronautics forming NASA. NASA took over the budget, assets and personnel of the former National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and began uperations on October 1, 1955.
In the mid 1950's the USA was at odds with the Russians and there was a threat to the national security. It was this volitile political climate that lead Eisenhower and his advisors to conclude we needed a non-military outlet for space discovery.
Oh what visionaries they were!
