The kids are headed back to school on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Rancho Gabriella Elementary School in Surprise AZ. As a parent, this event happens with mixed emotions. I love having my son home during the summer and watching him playing with his friends and enjoying summer life as a kid – no homework, playing late, staying up late watching movies and so on. On the other hand, it is nice to see him headed back into a schedule and continuing his learning while meeting a new set of friends. We are looking forward to Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, August 1, 2013 to see who his teacher will be and if he has friends in his home room. I know he meets this event with both excitement and trepidation, just as he will the first day of school on Monday.
So, this weekend Surprise will be bustling with parents and kids getting school clothes, getting back to school supplies, getting bikes ready to ride the first day and plans being made to carpool with other families. Once you have checked off your last item on the back to school to do list, you may want to escape the heat and hustle and bustle one last time for the summer.
Bearizona Wildlife Park in Williams is holding their Backwoods BBQ on August 2nd from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm where you can enjoy live country music by Marble Heart while working your way through the animals. You will walk through the exhibits of bear cubs, gators and snakes and see them close up. You can take a ride on a mechanical bull, get your fill of BBQ beef, beer and wine and cheer on those in the pie eating contest. Blankets or lawn chairs are encouraged, as well as dressing up in your best backwoods attire. Admission is $5.00 for children ages 4 – 12 and $15.00 for ages 13 and up.
