Are You Taking On New Clients? Puh-lease!
I've received dozens of them - I'm sure you have, too. You know what I'm talking about... The e-mail that goes something like this:
If you're taking on new clients, I'd like to include you in my private referral network to send you business leads through Referral Key.
Please accept my invitation below. Thanks!
Puh-leeeease!! You don't really care whether or not I'm taking on new clients!
I think these e-mails annoy me more than most because someone told these people that this is how you "network" or "market yourself." One of the things that I consistently tell my clients is this (and these e-mails prove my theory correct!):
Are you taking on new clients? That's just fantastic! Tell me what kinds of clients you're looking for and I'll see if I have anyone in my database that fits those characteristics. THAT is networking. And by connecting others, you are effectively marketing yourself in a positive manner. Getting 5,000 people in your database means nothing if you don't use it! And by using it, I mean using it correctly. Not as a spam bot to populate other networks you've decided to join.
Because every time I see that e-mail with the subject line "Are You Taking On New Clients?' I want to toss my computer out the window. (But of course I would NEVER do that - I love my computer!)
If you're going to network, network like you mean it and stop spamming folks, would ya?
