Are You Taking On New Clients? Puh-lease!

I've received dozens of them - I'm sure you have, too. You know what I'm talking about...  The e-mail that goes something like this:

Hi Renae,

If you're taking on new clients, I'd like to include you in my private referral network to send you business leads through Referral Key.

Please accept my invitation below. Thanks!

Puh-leeeease!!  You don't really care whether or not I'm taking on new clients!

I think these e-mails annoy me more than most because someone told these people that this is how you "network" or "
market yourself." One of the things that I consistently tell my clients is this (and these e-mails prove my theory correct!):

If you send the exact same thing that everyone else sends, no one is going to read or believe it because 20 other people sent them the same message.

Are you taking on new clients? That's just fantastic! Tell me what kinds of clients you're looking for and I'll see if I have anyone in my database that fits those characteristics. THAT is networking. And by connecting others, you are
effectively marketing yourself in a positive manner. Getting 5,000 people in your database means nothing if you don't use it!  And by using it, I mean using it correctly.  Not as a spam bot to populate other networks you've decided to join.

Because every time I see that e-mail with the subject line "Are You Taking On New Clients?' I want to toss my computer out the window. (But of course I would NEVER do that - I love my computer!)

If you're going to network, network like you mean it and stop spamming folks, would ya?

The ones that annoy me the most are the phone calls in which they tell me that they have buyers in their area looking for homes in my area and would I like to be connected with them.  I ask a very simple question each time - Are you a licensed realtor so I can send you a referral fee?  That cuts to the chase and ends the call.

Yes, those are terribly annoying, Marnie. Why can't people just network the way it's supposed to be done? That would make it so much easier for everyone involved, wouldn't it?
