Make sure to post a picture with your status update and NOT the Active Rain default button.
A picture helps communicate your idea. It creates interest in your post. It's more likely to be read, plussed, shared and get comments with a picture. So add a picture. One of the biggest mistakes I see on here is that people do their update from AR, and never push the button to insert a picture. Instead, the default Active Rain button appears on the stream. And, it looks stupid. It does nothing to attract attention for your post, and G+ users have been trained to realized that these are non-engaging newbies who don't know what they are doing, so most people will ignor you.
Instead, after you push the button, but before you push submit, hover over the AR logo and you'll see some arrows come up. As you push the arrows, you can use any of the other pictures in your post. This only takes 5 seconds to do (if that) and it's worth it.
