9 Things to Know about “Boomers”

A client asked several  great questions the other day: a)“Will boomers look to move or stay ? b) Seek second/vacation homes with main floor living convenience? c)Where will older adults choose to live?

As one of (or at least close to) that generation, I had a few ideas.
But I said, “Let me get back with you on that after I do a little more research.”

Here’s what I found:

1.This group is PRO-age. Pro-agers advocate an active lifestyle.

2.Pro-agers haves tremendous buying power- and- they get into of creative pursuits.

3.In general, they have positive attitudes and positive outlooks.

4.This is seen in life-affirming trends, research, memoirs, comments and conversations of and by people born between 1940 – 1964 or so.

5.Leading edge boomers celebrate connections- to photo boards and music, to iPads, and on-going conversations.

6.They take action toward changing outmoded stereotypes.

7.They seem to be redefining aging and prospects for positive futures with a good deal of determination.

8.In the U.S.A., the 50+ Crowd is reported to be- Individualistic, defiant (rejecting rules,) pragmatic, but idealistic.

9.“Raised with a sense of entitlement- [this cohort] is unlikely to be anything like the previous generations of days gone by.”

Now back to those questions.

a)“Will boomers look to move or stay ?  Answer: Whichever fits their situation best.

b) Seek second/vacation homes with main floor living convenience? Answer: Trends are toward main (one) floor living.

 c) Where will older adults choose to live? Answer: In lifelong homes and/or places where they feel at home

Summing it up- When it comes to AGING-IN-PLACE, expect a change and that it will happen with a good deal of wisdom and humor. And this can be a good thing for all concerned with sustainable excellence as well as the real estate market.

I am seeing a lot of boomers downsizing to one story homes and 2nd homes. You are right. They pretty much do what suits them.

Hi, I think this is spot one. One of the shortcomings of homes in our area is that way too many are two story. Lots ate smaller and they build up instead of out. I think San Diego is missing the boat on the Boomers because we have the weather and the many other things they are looking for but two or three story homes is not a solution for those that want to age in place.

I'm a boomer, closer to the tail end.  But you won't catch me wearing hot pink ugly shoes and matching hat, haha!  Or if I did I won't let you post my picture on the internet. ; )
