Not Putting Enough Information on Social Media Can Cause Problems

Not Putting Enough Information on Social Media Can Cause ProblemsA few years ago when I first signed up for Facebook, I had been warned not to put any personal information on my site. Of course FB asks if you are married, in a relationship, what books and movies you like and on and on.

So when I got to the status question, I left it blank as that is an option too. Well....the very next morning when I opened my site to read posts from my friends and colleagues, I found many personal emails from men and women wanting to be "very good friends". I thought to myself "Wait a minute, why is this happening as I had heard FB was protected".

Not Putting Enough Information on Social Media Can Cause ProblemsSo I called my daughter who was already an expert on the site and she opened it up and told me I should have put "Married" for my status instead of leaving it blank. So she logged in, changed it for me and reported the people to FB who had left the messages. Wow, I felt like I had just dodged a bullet but truly didn't know.

So when they say "Don't put too much on your Social Media sites, a little personal information is OK. Since, I never received any of these type comments or requests. Don't make yourself a target!

Kristin,

Very true! Also, it depends on what you are using your site for. If you don't put any personal information, in the form of telephone or email contacts, in order to weed out the "weirdos," then you potentially loose out on clients who have no idea how to get in touch with you. It's definitely a balance of both but it's never an exact science.

Hi Phil,

We have to put some information but I put most of my contact info on my Realtor page instead. You are so right that it is a balance of both. Like me, sometimes we make mistakes but learn from them later.

Yikes that is creepy. I am glad your daughter bailed you out so that you wouldn't be stalked by the unknown factor.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

There has to be a happy medium, though...too much info can definitely lead to identity theft.

Hi Debbie,

My first day on Facebook and the excitement turned to fear with weirdos sending me messages. I was never so glad that my daughter was very knowledgeable about the computer and social media.

Hi Joan,

When you hear that only your friends see your FB page, these were not my friends so I am not sure where they came from!!  Thanks for stopping by.

It is good to have an adequate amount of information in your Facebook profile. Even with that some of us receive strange friend requests almost every day.

I have to say, Facebook is great for contact with previous clients but as for gaining new ones, I get more from my AR blog posts.
