I hate to be the one that jinx us here in the North Georgia Mountains, but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! It has rained way too much; too many days and way too many inches! Today my rain gage was emptied TWICE and it is still drizzling! How do people do it in Seattle, I ask! Then again, they have the ocean not that far away and those gorgeous mountains that blow off steam now and then. But I digress...
Normally (is there such a thing these days?) we in North Georgia get about 44 inches of rain a YEAR, temps are in the high 80's and humidity is right along side of the temp... I know, not too ideal, right? But we are very used to it! We like hot sticky summers...they go great with baseball, water rafting, lazy napping under the fan on the veranda while drinking sweet tea! it gives a reason to SSSLLLOOOWWWW (Slow) down the pace and truly smell the roses! Besides, we all really do have air conditioning, even in our cars!
But this summer, we have had RAIN! Grey, dark, drippy rain! I love rain, normally. I garden, like to drink water and LOVE to read a book on a rainy afternoon, but things have really gotten out of hand!
Today we got over 10 inches of the wet stuff! Now we live in the mountains, so no flooded downtowns, school houses surrounded by swirling rapids... No, we get FLASH FLOODS and LAND SLIDES! Water travels down hill and around here that journey is accomplished in a hurry! Trees tumble when their roots just get too darn soggy, tiny creeks swell to raging torrents, roads get lost under currents. All in all it is a mess! The only saving grace is that the water moves on so quickly and recovery is really a snap.
I am posting a few pictures of the water's progress.
We start out as a mere creek, moving on to a stream and then on to a boisterous river!! Enjoy, because by tomorrow, they will all be back to quiet little brooks; innocent, demure, unpretentious! I love these mountains!!
