Balconies Can Be Risky Places

Real Estate Agent with Harry Norman Realtors

While not always in the headlines, the frequency of people falling from hi-rise buildings seems to be on the increase. Mainly it's falls from balconies or roof top amenities, but a few have fallen due to failure of windows, doors or railings. A study completed earlier this year notes an increase in accidental deaths of 45% between 2000 and 2010. While no clear reason was noted, the increase of hi-rise buildings seems obvious. The influence of horseplay, alcohol and recreational drugs was also cited.

She usually leans on the railing, an act she is now reconsidering. “I’m definitely more alarmed, I will not be leaning as much.”

Atlanta isn't known for a sky scratching skyline but deadly accidents are not uncommon. A resident of City Heights condos in Atlanta fell 18 stories to his death and the W Hotel in Atlanta was in the headlines for weeks after two women fell through a window in their room. One died at the scene, the other was critically injured, and investigations showed no evidence of drugs or alcohol. In Manhattan last week, a woman was killed in a fall from her balcony after the hand rail she was sitting on gave way.

Apartment and condo dwellers often covet the ability to get outside and enjoy the views and air, the lack of that can be an issue for some. However, the fear of a simple misstep where no margin for error exists worries some. For most however, the idea of an outside retreat, no matter how small or how high, is something most consider beneficial.
