Ever feel "need for speed?" Do you have a lust for being pressed back in your car seat by the powerful acceleration of a finely tuned racing car? Several of our clients here at GPS enjoy the "G's" of a tight turn, the whine of the motor at full rev and the high-pitched squeal of their car's traction control when it's pushed to the edge. More and more of these self-confessed "speed freaks" have asked GPS to find weekend properties in Sullivan County, NY. Why? To be close to The Monticello Motor Club .
The private drivers' practice race course and motor club in Monticello, has just announced its Taste of the Track program, a way for non-members to spend a half or full day at the track, driving the club's fleet of speedy sports cars and exotic racers, or bringing their own car to see "just what my baby can do."
The drivers club has amenities similar to those of a high-end golf resort, including clubhouse, restaurant and snack bar. The only difference is it features 4.1 miles of smooth asphalt, 22 turns and 450 feet of elevation change instead of languid fairways and rolling greens. Members can take racing lessons, test the continuously changing fleet of club cars available for driving, and take their own cars out for a three digit mile-per-hour spin.
Taste of the Track gives non-members just that, a taste of what it's like to experience some of the world's fastest race cars, and test drive notoriously fast road cars under conditions which are safe, controlled and legal. The club keeps a fleet of cars on hand which are constantly changing. They also allow manufactures from around the world to lend them new cars just off the production line in need of testing and public exposure. Recently, Bugatti brought the new Grand Sport Vitesse to MMC for a few special test drives. Brian Redman (co-designer of MMC's track) was in attendance along with Bugatti's test driver, Butch Leitzinger. (At one point, someone in the crowd of admiring onlookers noted that the 16-cylinder, quad turbocharged engine sounded just like a jet aircraft during takeoff.) Other cars the club has featured recently included a Gumpert Apollo, a McLaren MP4-12c, and the Lexus LFA.
The Taste of the track is available almost any weekday or weekend, and drivers need no prior track experience. After breakfast (included in the price, along with lunch) drivers are given one on one coaching in the delicate art of race car driving. After that, drivers take to the course for solo laps in either their own cars, or in one from MMC's high performance fleet.
The Monticello Motor Club is perhaps one of the most unusual country clubs in America. Aside from having the look and feel of a high-end country club, it offers the excitement of a Formula One race track. The track can be set up in twelve different configurations, including a 3.6 mile full course track. Track programs allow members to enjoy a variety of motor sport activities including a nearly unlimited open-track driving experience, MMC's private racing series, plus special events such as exclusive test drives and a chance to see some of the most unique (and expensive) cars in the world. Prices range from $750 for a half-day in your own car to $2000 for a full day of testing MMC's stable of exotics. The Taste of the Track program is obviously a great draw to the club, and certainly it's proving good for our business here at GPS.
