The Tale of the Mysterious Priest

For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible. This statement was one of the dozens of comments made about a story on the Internet last week about a “mysterious priest” who was at the scene of horrific car crash in Missouri. Of all the comments left regarding the article, with its brevity, best summed up the story you are about to hear.

Nineteen year old Katie Lentz of Quincy, Mo., was involved in a head on car crash…the victim of a drunk driver. With her vital signs plummeting, and pinned behind the wheel of her convertible, and rescue workers unable to free her from the wreckage, Katie asked for those around her to pray for her.

That’s when first responders reported seeing whom they assumed to be a Catholic priest who seemed to have appeared from out of nowhere…despite a 2 mile police blockade setup around the site of the crash.

New London Fire Chief, Raymond Reed said, "He began to pray and use the anointing oil. There was a calmness that, to me, seemed to come over the entire scene." In addition to the man showing up to calm the injured girl, the firefighter’s equipment kept failing as well. The mystery man told everyone to remain calm and that their equipment would work. Reed said. "Instantaneously, at that moment, our neighboring department arrived with fresh extrication tools."

As young Katie was pulled from the wreckage, the mysterious priest seemed to vanish into thin air before anyone could thank him. One of Katie’s friends, Travis Wiseman told reporters, “"Whether it was just a priest as an angel, or an actual angel coming down, he was an angel to everyone and to Katie."

In an effort to find out who this person was, police had a composite facial drawing made from eyewitness accounts. They have showed the drawing to nearby parishes, but to no avail…the picture does not match any of the priests on staff. According to Deacon Dan Joyce, “Out of respect for the privacy of any priest who may have been involved and does not wish to come forward, the Diocese does not plan to further investigate this incident. The Diocese is grateful that a priest was able to exercise his ministry in this manner and requests prayers for healing of the victim, as well as prayers of thanks.”

To further add an element of mystic to the entire event, the police and fire departments have combed through over 80 photographs taken at the accident scene…and the mystery man isn’t in any of them!

"I think that this time I've actually witnessed a guardian angel at work," Jeremiah See, of the New London Fire Department told ABC News.

I think the most striking point to this entire episode was young Katie, in her hour of need, had asked those around her to pray with her. I will leave you with this… The servants of God are protected by invisible, rather than visible, beings. But if these guard you they do so because they have been summoned by your prayer.” ~ St. Ambrose.

An update...

A priest has come forward saying he was the "mystery priest" who helped Katie. It seems he was coming back from serving mass at a parish whose priest was sick...and normally would never be on that road. It seems that he stopped his car and proceeded past barricades to work his way up to the accident to offer his help...he said he had a feeling he should ignore all the warnings to not cross the police barricades. While he was not a angel from heaven, he was an angel none-the-less.
