Our Afternoon With A Professional Athlete

I don't know if you remember your 4th birthday.  I don't, but I can pretty much guarantee it was at a public park or in the backyard of my childhood home.  My son, who turned four today, is a soccer nut, so it only seemed fitting to have his birthday revolve around his favorite team, FC Dallas

Several months ago, my husband and I attended the annual FC Dallas Foundation fundraiser "Cocktails and Cleats".  It was there that we bid on an hour and a half with any FCD player at Main Event for bowling and games.  We ultimately decided to make this Beckett's birthday gift and requested FC Dallas defender, #14 George John, join us for fierce competition and a little bit of fun.

You never know what you're going to get when you meet up with those living in the limelight.  I can tell you with confidence that George was kind, sincere, funny and a great sport.  My daughter said, "He's taller than I thought", standing at 6' 3''.

Sporting a soft cast from his recently broken hand in last night's 3-3 tie against LA Galaxy, "Georgie Boy" as we lovingly call him, was ready to take on the challenging games of skill and torment in the Main Event arcade.

George John

George is just like any other person out there despite his status.  The giant prize claw got the best of him, even though he and Beckett had a discussion about the proper placement of the three-pronged mechanism.  It was discovered that the yellow duck couldn't be grabbed due to the massive bouncy ball in the way.

George John air hockey

He plays air hockey with ease.  It helps to have a long reach to make up for his partner's deficiency.

George John bowling

He wears rented bowling shoes on his one free day off of training this week.

George John good sport

He's good-natured.  And able to bite his tongue.  In the lane next to us, a young bowler asked if he played for FC Dallas and they started to have a short conversation.  I started to pay a bit more attention when the boy said "Yeah, that one guy Land something or other scored three goals last night".  I probably would have put his head down the ball return, but George just smiled and moved on.  Well played, Georgie Boy.

He gets beat at bowling.  Handily.  It was funny to see his competitive side, getting frustrated with the dreaded 7-10 split.  But, it was still fun.  Oh wait, that's because I was the one doing the butt kicking!

George John dancing

He rocks Dance Dance Revolution.  I think he must play at home.

This was just one of those experiences that we will remember for the rest of our lives.  George was so gracious, down-to-earth and fun.  There was nothing forced and my kids felt like he was part of the family.  In fact, Trinity said she wished he was her brother.  He is a great "poster boy" for FC Dallas.  Thanks Georgie Boy and FC Dallas for giving us an absolutely fabulous time today!  It was certainly a four year old birthday to remember!

What a great post and interesting. Birthday. That sounds like it was a great opportunity for you all and lots of fun. It is good to know Georgie was a great sport and very down to earth. I will have to remember this idea for when I have grand kids! Thanks for sharing.

how awesome is that?  You are making memories that will last a life time!  Before you know it, they are grown and off to College (sending 2 off this week myself) but no matter what, he will ALWAYS remember how much love you showed and how cool you are that you got a Pro Athlete to join his birthday party!  Way to go Mom and Dad!
