The city of Arvada provides a free service for senior citizens that is an emergency response system that could potentially be a life saver. It is called the “Lock Box Program”. The program is funded partially through donations and community grants. Officer Don Sikkema, who is the Arvada Police Department Senior Liaison, will install a “lock box” (similar to those used by realtors) to front doors that allows first responders access to homes in case of emergency. A “File of Life” sticker is applied to the front doors (of participants) to inform responders that there is crucial medical information attached to a magnetic pocket placed on the refrigerator. These lock boxes do not interfere with the normal use of the door or the lock.
The address and the lock box combination are stored in a secured police computer file. The combination is only given to the rescue personnel if no one answers the locked door. After a response, the combination is changed to provide optimum security. Addresses are given to first responders by radio, and the lock box combination is relayed by cellular phone. This minimizes the possibility of unauthorized personnel access to personal information.
To be eligible, you must be a senior citizen; you must live in a private home or apartment and reside in Arvada. If you rent your home, you must have permission from the home owner. You also need to provide a house key, and sign a release and agree to return the lock box, if you no longer need this service.
