My tenant died in the apartment....

I am a Realtor and I have a property management business on the side.  I manage a 5 plex for my step mom with a friend of mine.   It isn't in a terribly good section of Caldwell nor is it a particularly nice place.   I have found it depressing in the past.  Yesterday I got a call from one of my tenants.  She found the mother of a young man screaming with his dog in her arms that her son was dead.   She called 911.

The police, detectives and the coroner were out there.  I knew the son had some issues but he was a nice pleasant young man with great family support.  Apparently he had died a few days before.  I do not know yet why he died... I know his dog was stuck there with him.

I am trying to be supportive of the mom (who plans on cleaning out the apartment). I cannot imagine living in the fear that my child would die then finding my child's body.   I feel but there for the grace of G-d go I.

What made me lucky enough to have healthy children where I can imagine a good future for them?  The mom is like me solidly middle class with 4 other healthy children.   Today I feel contemplative.

I alerted my step mom who told me she did not want hear about it.  My dad insisted on going to the apartment with me.  Even though he is not totally well he would not let me walk into the situation by myself (have I said I love my dad).  By the time I picked up my dad and got to Caldwell everyone but the neighbor was gone.   I called the police who told me that they have no questions and that I should contact the boy's mother.  I did not enter the place out of respect (besides they might be investigating).  I also called my friend that I manage with and my broker.

One of the other agents had this happen and told me to call disaster cleanup.   The mom called me this morning and told me their plans to clean up.  They asked me not to go in until they were done next week.  We talked about her son and what had happened and the funeral arrangements.

This was more then I bargained for.....

Yes, this can be tough. Yet in real estate as in life there is always certainty of death which we as people and professionals must deal with. Sorry you had to go through this. I've had situations where clients died a few hours before closing on a deal. Nothing anyone likes or is ready for.
