Don’t Have a Mover Nightmare

Don’t have a mover nightmare.  Imagine standing in front of your new home with keys in your hand and the moving truck pulls up and parks in your driveway. The movers get out of the truck, but refuse to open the back door and move your belongings into your home because there is another charge to unload and take your things into the home.  Moving into a new home should be a good experience, not one like the previous scenario.

Here are some steps to hiring a mover so that your move goes smoothly.

-           Do your homework by researching companies.  Ask for referrals from friends, family and your Real Estate Agent. Check the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been complaints filed against the company(ies) you may think about using.

-           Get more than one estimate. You may even want to ask a representative to come to your home to visualize the furniture so that the estimate is more accurate.  This way there are no surprises in extra charges the day of the move for oversize or heavy items.  Ask if the estimate is binding or nonbinding.

-           Purchase insurance. Moving or Relocation insurance can be purchased. Homeowners or renters insurance does not cover belongings in transit between homes. If you would like your belongings insured against breakage, you should have the movers pack and box your items.  Movers usually are only liable up to a certain dollar amount for your belongings.

-           Above all – read your contract. Pay close attention to the details and make sure you understand the contract completely.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions about rates, liability, dates and claims.  Only when you are comfortable that you have all information needed, sign the contract and keep a copy for yourself.

-           Check your belongings once they arrive at their destination. Make sure you have everything and make sure it is in good condition.

Using these steps can take some of the stress away from the moving process. Moving into a new home should be a good experience and you should enjoy it.  Make the most out of your new experience.
