Do you have pets? Follow these special steps to make sure your home sells.

It doesn’t have to be difficult to sell your home if you’re a pet owner, but there are a few extra steps you need to take in order to ensure a successful sale. When you’re preparing your home to sell, your real estate agent will help you “stage” your home. That means, removing clutter, rearranging furniture, landscaping, etc. For pet owners though, there are a few special steps during the staging process that need to be taken in order to give your home its best chance to sell. Here are some great tips for pet owners looking to sell their home:

Remove all evidence that you have pets-inside and outside.

When a buyer walks into your home, let them focus on your home and not how many dog toys there are or the water spots around the water bowl. Make sure to clean up after your pets before a showing. Vacuum and sweep daily to keep pet hair under control.

Make sure your house smells great!

Not every home that has pets has a pet smell. But just in case, make sure to freshen up your home for showings. Try airing out your home by keeping the windows open if the weather allows. Keep fabrics, carpets, curtains and cushions clean and freshly washed. When you clean your carpets, clean your furniture as well.

Remove your pet(s) during all showings.

This might be tricky since you might be at work during the day during a showing. When you can, try to remove your pet from the home during a showing. You do not want to prevent a potential buyer from viewing a room because your pet is there. You might be thinking, “I will just keep them in the cage.” This is not always the solution either. The potential buyer might be more focused on your cute pet locked in the cage then the room they are in.

Clean up!

This applies to litter boxes, hamster cages, and your backyard if you have dogs. Stay on top of it! Don’t let the smell and gross image of animal waste distract the buyer from really being able to focus on what’s great about your home.

See? It doesn’t have to be very difficult to sell your home if you have pets; there are some small extra steps you can take to make sure that you’re giving your home its best chance at selling. Follow these tips and talk to your real estate agent to ensure that your home is ready to sell.

Steve, I am a huge animal lover, however our beloved animals can make selling a home difficult at times. You have listed great tips for all animal owners selling their home, actually some of these are great tips, even if one is not selling their home.

We make it easy. You make it home.

Great info for sellers. Sometimes they don't even realize there is a smell because they live there, but in most cases there will be some sort of smell.
