The number of real estate agents in Florida is declining

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Emerald Coast Realty
According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) the number of Florida real estate agents has declined 10.3% from Jane 2007 to January 2008. The decline seems to be gaining momentum since in a one month period (12/2007 - 1/2008) the number of Realtors declined 6.1%. I assume this trend will continue until the number of agents falls back into alignments with unit sales volumes.

Kim, it isn't that the decline is gaining momentum but from12/07 to 1/08 is when the NAR dues are payable and when agents can decide not to renew.  It also take into account the number of agent who renew but are doing something else until the market rebounds.

Although sad to see some colleagues go, the truth of the matter is that the market cannot bear our former numbers. This goes for anywhere in the nation. I hope that you have the where with all to stay. Probably a quote from Nietsche is apt? That which does not kill you, makes you stronger.

I agree.  Those that have used real estate as a sideline or jumped on at the height thinking it was an easy waay to riches, most likely will fall out.  Unfortunately there will be a few professionals that just can't weather the storm.

Hi Miriam,

During this same period of (12/2007 - 1/2008) nationally we see the greatest one month reduction in Realtors from the roles since at least 2000; I am only graphing data back to 2000. What we are seeing here is an adjustment within our industry in response to reduced sales volumes.

Lead - follow or get out of the way.  As a full time agent I realize the need to thin out the memebership or then we need dues money.  To many agents popoing off one here or there takes away a living for many full time agents.

I can see that for sure.  When our MLS dues became due in The Florida Keys we lost many agents.
