Drying Off Isn't A Bad Thing From Time To Time...

By

showerImagine, if you will, the effects of a long, deliciously hot drenching shower.  The steam rising up creating a sauna like atmosphere. The comforting, soothing sounds of running water draining away the day's minor and major irritations.

And...the puckered, drying out of skin no longer saoking up moisture, but being drained of it... The pickled wrinkles emerging first on hands and then feet and finally chapping and irritating the very body that it was meant to cleanse.

Too much of a good thing, even when it's pure water has that effect.  It's human nature to want to stay put forever.  But, as I re-discovered today, it's good to venture out, dry off a bit and explore the wider world of the blogosphere outside of Active Rain

It has taken me a awhile to really get into downloading the RSS feed of blogs I found interesting (I use the google reader) But it is slowly becoming a part of my routine.  Today, I found some really interesting articles, some rants vis a vie an on-going blog war and lots of great tidbits.  Here are a few that you might find worth perusing...

First stop was the Featured Post Section of Real Town Blogs...

starfishFrances Flyn  Thorsen posted a video today about Foreclosure Fraud.  This excellent video is a powerful tool to fight fraud and help consumers understand how hucksters who claim to be there to "help" them are really stealing people's hard earned equity. Definitely worth watching...

Then I read one of the BEST Real Estate Market Trends Reports I have ever seen.  This was on par with the stuff that Gary Bolen writes about Lake Tahoe.  This post by Mary Pope-Handy is a fascinating...and I mean riveting account of the nuances which are often missed when we paint the real estate market with broad strokes.  If you think these reports are normally boring...this kind of analysis can restore your faith in all the GOOD Reasons why real estate agents who truly know their stuff will always be in hot demand.

Sstarfishhoe String Branding has become one of my Favorite Marketing blogs.  This post about using images on Social Media and other aspects of on line marketing to intensify the effect of a branding effort is worth reading and thinking about how you can incorporate this strategy effectively.

When the new CEO of NAR, Dale Stinton stopped by this blog, he demonstrated that perhaps NAR is beginning to understand how significant the Blogging Movement really is for the real estate industry.  His comment, which is the bulk of the post is definitely worth checking out if you're interested in the thought processes of "the Powers that Be."

Getting out of the Rain and visiting other blogs is good for expanding one's horizons.  So is taking time OFF from blogging period...from time to time.  I started the practise about 6 months ago of not Blogging at all at least one day a week.  It's my time to refresh & reconnect from the distortion that can sometimes creep up on us when we are on line.

I also find my balance in the following:  Reading good books AND most importantly relating and talking to people who are not behind a computer screen on a regular basis.  Otherwise, I think it's easy to become puckered up and skewed in our perspective on life, business and a whole lot of other things.  Somewhat like spending way too much time in the shower...

So was your adventure actually more fun that Active Rain? Or was it just a little bit of necessary moisturizer before jumping back in? =)

Hi Lisa...staying in the shower too long dries you up.  So does too much time spent on any specific platform.  Inspiration for me has always involved reading articles and books that engage and force me to think.  Good blogs do that too...on Active Rain and outside of it.

Thanks for the link to NARwisdom Lola, I had not encountered that site before.  I read through the posts until I found the comment by NAR's Dale Stinton.  It was interesting and I left a comment of my own on the post "Does NAR need a Social Media Guru?"

Deborah...that was a fascinating exchange wasn't it.  I know that our past President Pat V. Combs also launched her blog last year.  It is good to see Dale Stinton indicating that they are investigating what is being said on the blogosphere and recognize the need to be involved more proactively with the medium.

Lola, it was fascinating, I am so glad you posted about it!  There is a lot of coroporate fear of and about blogging out there and NAR is no exception.  The thing is, is that companies would find themselves in better positions to improve their business and bottom line if they really utilized what the blogosphere can do...just think of how much more effective NAR could be, both for the public consumer and the professional RE community.

Absolutely Deborah.  It's such a new concept and there is so little education about it that most people are still "in the dark."  But like Dale Stinton asserts, "getting our feelings hurt is not a good reason to not enter the fray...we might learn something in the process"  The paralyzing grip of fear threatens to choke and strangle so many in the real estate community...even as we loose a grip on the ability to engage and influence the conversation.  It's really unfortunate...

Thanks for the link to NARWisdom Lola!  (And thanks for the comment and book suggestion Deborah)

I can tell from the stats that a lot of people at NAR are reading NARWisdom, but  Dale is the first to leave a comment. I think it's a great beginning...

I've read outside blogs of people I have met here and regularly visit them, but haven't stepped out of the "rain" much to search for those who are completely new to me.    Thank you for the links you provided Lola.  I'm very interested in reading them, and others as I step out a bit.

Lola, it is overwhelming sometimes there is just so much I would like to read.  I get Inman and RIS Media daily plus all of the social websites and AR.  Thanks for sharing some of your favorites with us!  I will bookmark and come back.  BTW, the current president of NAR was my mentor in California and has a blog.  He is such a great leader, perhaps he is having an influence on their perspective of blogging.

Hi Sharon...LOL  I don't think we'd want to get totally away just yet...The SEO is too good. :)  So are the relationships with folks here.  However, it is good to be aware of what's happening in the broader world of the real estate blogosphere.  Some of the best minds in our industry are out there & we can read their thoughts for FREE!

Hi Kris, There's a wealth of information here on Active Rain too & it's definitely a great place to start and be introduced to some of these authors.  You will often find that they post a limited blog profile on Active Rain and more on their own sites.  Using a RSS feed reader makes the process more efficient.

Diane, Thanks for your comment. I appreciated Dale Stinton's response on NAR Wisdom.  From what I've read about him so far, he seems very progressive.
