Are You A Routine Person?

In the world of Real Estate, routines can be your best friend. Top producing agents always have a routine- whether they are aware of it or not. They do those mundane tasks day in and day out that create consistent results.

Not all routines are good routines though. You may find yourself busy doing "your real estate routine" that you do every week, yet find yourself getting dismal results. Why you ask is your routine not a success?! You're doing the wrong things!

Here's what to do: Create a list of what your current routine consists of. Then, go through each item on your list and ask yourself ‘is this a task that makes me money?' Examples of this are following up with a prospect and in turn getting an appointment to show that potential client a home. These are referred to as ‘money making tasks'. Now not all tasks that are necessary fit into this category. There are routine office procedures like paying bills, organizing your workspace clutter, etc that need to be done to be productive and in business yet are not ‘money making' activities. Ask yourself- ‘is this item necessary for my business?' Also, you need to evaluate how much time you are devoting to your ‘non-money making activities' - too much time spent on these items means most of your precious energy is being spent on these items and need to be redirected. If you're spending all day on non-money making activities, you must re-adjust your routine so that you will see better and more constant results. Cross off your list the tasks that are not making you money and that are not necessary, or readjust the amount of time you spend on them. Stick to your new routine list and remember, all successful people have some sort of routine and stick to it!

Feel free to share your routine so that others may learn from it!

Back in the 80's in real estate we called it A-B-C work. "A " work directly impacts your business today, and is the most income producing. "B" work is what is needed to maintain "A".   "C" work is whatever is left; usually the fun stuff and wasted time stuff. Sad to say most agents never get past "C" work, and then wonder why they are not a top producer.  Nice post.

Wow Great Post!

I try and do all my marketing when I'm fresh in the morning early afternoon and then maintain and email in the afternoon.  But I think I'll still do some "adjusting".

I start my day early, 6:30am, I journal, write 8 notes to family, friends and/or clients, plan my day in my daytimer and then I take a walk with my dog (about a mile), then return to my office to make my phone calls.  This is every day, Monday thru Saturday.  I make my appts after this routine.  I check email after this routine.  Yes, I am Coached by Brian Buffini:) His systems do work, I am one of thousands of his clients.

It's a Good Life!

Jennifer - Great article!  I've always liked Stephen Covey's "First Things First" approach.  When I set up my routine to accomplish the most important tasks first (not just the most urgent), Life is Good!  Whenever I stray from my routine or systems, life becomes more challenging.

Best Wishes,

Kelsie

Jennifer...Big confession, I fly by the seat of my pants.  I am very unstructured and now wondering if it's too late to change.  Fran's schedule sounded so calming.  Maybe I need some of that in my life.

Food for thought!

Kathleen-
I think there are a lot of people in this business like yourself. This career attracts the "free-spirited" types and they are usually not so great at the details! I have been refining by business constantly over the years and I get better at it all the time. I think it's never to late to change! You just need to take some baby steps toward growing into your own routine. If you take on more than you are used to, you will become overwhelmed and want to quit the routine all together. Take it slow and grow!
