Tragedy strikes Victoria Realtor®

Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Fusion

For those of you haven't heard about the murder of Lindsay Buziak, a real estate agent in Victoria, British Columbia I urge you to read the Times Colonist article online. For those of you have read this article I am sure you feel the same way I do. No one should be scared to do their job, yet this killing has left most of us, especially female agents feeling a bit less secure in our day to day dealings.

We don't want to have to ask every client we deal with to go through a security check before we can go out and look at homes, but we have to do something differently.

Lindsay had a bad feeling about the showing, yet went and did it anyways. She was a young agent, and like most of us newer agents, she probably felt like she HAD to. As a new agent you don't want to miss a possible lead or sale and this is probably why she was called. I feel for her family and her friends in this moment of despair. She was out trying to make a good honest living and she was killed. She called her boyfriend to have him meet her there, but he was too late. There are many things we can do to make our job safer and most people talk about a ‘buddy system' but this isn't always easy when you are all busy agents.

What can we do as real estate agents? I think our associations and governing bodies need to come up with a better way for us to screen potential buyers and enforce all agents to use this method! If you want to look at houses, you have to prove identification. This is not unreasonable, you have to have identification to check out a book at the library and no one seems to get upset at that, so lets figure out a way to make it safe for everyone and to STOP predators!

I look forward to everyone's suggestions on how to make our world a safer one but especially in the field of real estate.

Always follow your instincts.  If you have a bad feeling, don't go or take someone with you.  I always carry a can of pepper spray.  Thank goodness, I a=have never had to use it.

Kari, many women (and some men) are taking Taser classes.  It's not lethal, but it will put a criminal out of commission for a while.  It's a shame that we have to be prepared for predators, but since they're out there, forewarned is forearmed.

Now that some time has gone by, it seems there is more to this story than was first apparent.

Police say they are close to making an arrrest, another Realtor (boyfriend) was interviewed for several hours regarding this matter and may or may not be the person to which they have referred.

Time will tell, as it always does, what will transpire; but I must say now to all, Be Safe but Live Your Life.

This is very frightening!  I have thought of taking a self-defense course, but haven't gotten around to it.  I'm wandering if most agents have clients they are meeting for the first time  meet them at their office.  I have heard this is the best way, but it is not always feasible.  I am wandering where I would find information on a taser class.  I believe the idea of having a set standard through the association is the BEST way to deal with it because it takes the monkey off our back- because then the association would require us to take precautions!  Customers can't get upset with you if everyone is doing the same thing!

Meeting at the office is the best policy, period.  If potential clients won't meet you at the property, then they are more than likely not serious anyway.  Meeting at the office is always feasible.  I've had clients take a bus from the other side of the city to meet me at my office. A "good" buyer will always come to the office, as long as you explain the benefits to them (how you will go over their requirements, agency relationships, see what else is available on MLS etc.).  In my experience the people that won't come down to the office are either a) not serious (nosy neighbour) or b) serious but highly controlling and will be a complete pain in the butt if you do decide to work with them or c) dangerous.  We as REALTOR's have to be in control, we are the professionals.  That is just my opinion anyways.
