Nametag Etiquette

By
Real Estate Agent with Leigh Brown & Associates, RE/MAX Executive

I can't believe I'm writing this.  I'm an advocate of wearing your nametag just about everywhere you go, never can tell when someone will need to talk real estate.

But I just got back from a funeral.  I'm sitting there waiting for the service to begin, and up the aisle comes a local Realtor (and I love her, she's a total sweetie, but she's newer in the business) WEARING HER NAMETAG.  Are you serious?  This is a funeral.

There's a time and a place for everything.  Put the darn thing away-it's tacky and doesn't do very much for your professional image!  (I am trying very hard to convince myself that she just forgot she was wearing it, but considering that it was on her suit jacket and not her overcoat, it's a hard sell).

Ick.

I just that question in one of my classes.  He asked if it was okay to wear his name badge to church, I asked if he went to church for God or sell real estate?  His answer was god, right answer and I said that was fine.  Funeral NO.

Hey I will be in Charlotte March 20th speaking at your Tech Fair, hope to see you

Very classy. Perhaps the name tag should have read "not the deceased".

I know it is not funny, but why am I laughing? I do believe she forgot. I wore a suit the other day with my balloon.

I generally wear golf shirts with my name tag embroidered on them.  People stop me all the time to talk about real estate.  I would never wear it to a wedding or funeral though.  I also have name tags for the days I wear a nicer shirt.galump

I'm having a hard time wearing it.... period, but to a funeral.  I'm sure everyone else was thinking the same thing as you.

That was a little tacky and I hope she doesn't actually lose business in the future because of that. People really do remember that stuff and it is really a shame that people don't know when to and when not to conduct business.

I actually had someone try to hand me a business card when I was leaving a gym's shower area. OK, A little awkward, maybe that is why I don't go to gyms anymore.

Leigh, tacky, tacky, slap her little backie... I really think it's hard to forget you are wearing a NT.  You can usually see it out of the corner of your eye. I would not wear it to any church function or even a gathering of my Ladies Guild... but funeral....ICK!

Leigh, this is almost sad it is in such bad taste.  I remember some of the sharks in my old CA days that would attend funerals just to try to get listings.  That is just about as low as anyone could go.  And some wonder why we get a bad reputation.  Thanks for sharing this!

I don't know of course who the funeral was for but at least she made the effort to attend.  To give her the benefit of the doubt perhaps she was in a hurry and rushing and just forgot??

Definately very tacky and too bad someone didn't have an opportunity to ask her if she was aware her name tag was on.  Or, she could have been trolling like I can remember attorneys doing following accidents and ambulances to the hospital emergency room when I was working there in Miami!  Really tacky!!  Another really, really tacky thing to do is the obituary following thing -- hopefully that wasn't what she was doing!!
