Sometimes a Mistake is not a bad thing -- A little embarrassing perhaps

Well, for those of you who have noticed, I have been running a contest on Active Rain to win free closing gifts. All anyone had to do was look at a couple of photos on my website, tell me two changes they noticed between the before and after shots, and they were entered. I have touted the great odds and the opportunity to win.

So, this week I received an email from a realtor who basically asked me to explain why I charge a $35.00 retouching fee when he couldn't see a difference in the I Spy pics. Ooops. Somehow I posted the same photo twice as before and after photos. He gave up after about 10 minutes of staring at my pictures.

I had to own up to my mistake, and to sooth his feelings. So, I'm sending him a free gift for his next closing. I think he might be a happy camper now, and a long-term customer.

Whatcha' think?

HERE'S THE BEFORE PHOTO HE SENT TO ME FOR CUSTOM CHANGE-OF-ADDRESS CARDS

You filled in the grass and trees.  Is this considered deceptive advertising? Are buyers disappointed when they actually visit the property? There was discussion about re-touching photos some time back on AR.

It is human to err -- I think someone said that!  At any rate, you did the right thing and now you have a happy customer.  I will have to check out your website.

Diane, sometimes we make a longer lasting bond with a customer when there is a problem and we do something extra when we remedy the problem.  It's actually more memorable than a transaction that goes perfectly.  People just expect things to go perfectly.

Carol - I also straightened the sides of the house which were leaning in because of the way the photo was taken.

The use of my retouched photos is as gifts to be given at closings. i create change-of-address cards, framed renderings, coasters, cutting boards, mugs, and notes. These are not used for advertising purposes, and I can assure you, the clients are delighted with them.

However, I also create renderings for commericial real estate properties that are undergoing renovations and repositioning in their markets, so the changes are to indicate what is coming. There is nothing wrong with that either as the message is clear.

With respect to retouching residential real estate photos for marketing purposes, I think that it is fine to put in grass and trees in new developments. Clearly, renderings are used to sell homes in subdivisions. There is no attempt at deceit; there is just no other way to give a buyer a clear picture of what is to come.

It would be deceitful to use retouched pictures to draw clients to an existing home that is in terrible repair. And, frankly, it would make the realtor look very bad if he/she did not first warn the prospect about the discrepancy between the photo and the actual home. This is not, however, what my photos are used for.
