Are You a Doobie Brothers Fan?

I sat in anticipation waiting for the Doobie Brothers to come out on the stage.  Growing up in the 70's was great listening to the Doobie Brothers, Santana, Three Dog Night, etc.  How lucky I am to be born and raised in an area where so many famous people got their start.  I was raised in Cupertino, CA.  I used to ride my bike through the apricot and cherry orchards that are now the home of Apple computers.  Boy, have things changed.  Well now I live about 15 miles from Cupertino.  I thought I'd mention a few little known facts about the area I live in Campbell, CA.

  • The fruit cocktail was invented in Campbell
  • In 1975, Mayor Rusty Hammer, at 21, became the youngest mayor ever in the United States. (Rusty recently died at the age of 54, January 28th, 2008 after a long fight with leukemia)
  • Doobie Brother Beginnings!  In 1967, Patrick Simmons enrolled at San Jose State College where he pursued a degree in Psychology. He alternated his studies with performances on most weekends. It was during one of these performances in 1969 at the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell, California that's Pat first met Tom Johnston and John Hartman, who were at the time playing in a band with former Moby Grape member and mutual friend Skip Spence. The three musicians, introduced by Skip, began a relationship that would last for over twenty-five years.
  • Sylvia Browne, psychic, spiritualist, and author lives in Campbell
  • Lars Frederiksen, singer and guitarist for the punk band Rancid, grew up in Campbell and frequently mentions the town in songs by both Rancid and his side project Lars Frederiksen & The Bastards.

I'm sure I've missed a thing or two...do you have some little known facts about your community?  I'd love to hear them.

I don't know what the Doobie Brothers have to do with real estate but, I do remember going to a concert at the Fillmore East and having 2nd row center tickets for Santana and Three Dog Night, neither of which had top billing. That went to Canned Heat. On another occasion at the Fillmore I saw the Allman Brothers Band and again, Canned Heat was top billed. I spent 5 days at the original Woodstock and I still think Canned Heat doing Refried Boogie got the crowd going more then anyone. I must admit Sly and the Family Stone also got a great crowd reaction. It's a shame most people had to leave when Hendrix came on Monday morning. I doubt there was more then a thousand people there at that point. What great memories.

Christine - Does the Doob's ever come your way?  I just saw them here in Los Gatos last Sept.  Pat still looks great.  This one will grip the heart, his grandkids were there.  He mention during the concert that he wrote South City Midnight Lady, while living on a street in Los Gatos.  Not sure where he lives now, but I know their corporation still owns property around here.
