Back when Steamboat Springs, Colorado was a ranching community with more cows than people, this little schoolhouse was where all the readin', 'ritin and 'rithmetic went on.
Steamboat Springs is still a small community with a great reputation for educating its students, but times have changed and the school population is growing.
To keep up with the high standard of excellence, Steamboat Springs is adding on to Strawberry Park Elementary and completely re-building Soda Creek Elementary School.
Strawberry Park Elementary School is one of two elementary schools in Steamboat Springs. Strawberry Park Elementary is for students grades K-5 and is one of a few schools in Colorado rated "excellent". Click here for information on Steamboat Schools.
Here are photos of the new "pod" which will house new offices and classrooms.
Soda Creek Elementary School is the other K-5 school in Steamboat Springs. It was completely demolished in June, 2007 and is being rebuilt from the ground up. Even with all the snow Steamboat got this year, construction workers have been working like ants on steroids to get Soda Creek Elementary school ready as fast as they can. Here's what the school looked like on Feb 22:
This year, all the patient teachers and students are housed at "Camp Soda Creek", a modular campus a couple blocks from the Soda Creek Elementary construction site.
When work is completed and the students and teachers move into their state-of-the-art school, the Camp Soda Creek trailers will seem like a distant memory.
