T.I.A. - a Mini Stroke - Difficult when it hits near home

By
Real Estate Agent

My Dad had his second stroke this week.  They call it a T.I.A.  It is a mini stroke, which is a warning sign of things possibly to come in the future.  His sister is 89 now, and has had several.  My Dad will be 86 very soon.  He lives in a local nursing facility where he can receive the excellent care he requires.

During this 'Spell', he was unable to put a sentence together.  He did not know his name.  He did know who I was though.  I am his closest Realative, who has had the chore of placing both my parents in a nursing facility.

Then, as if my magic, or an act of God, the spell was over, and he was "back" .  He was again aware of his surroundings, and telling jokes once again.  It is difficult to see your parents go through suffering in their later years.  For those of you that need a definition, This is what a Transient Ischemic Attack really is.......

I Googled T.I.A. and this is what I learned.....

When the brain loses blood supply, it tries to restore blood flow. If blood supply is restored, function may return to the affected brain cells, permitting return of function to the affected body part. This is what happens with a TIA (transient ischemic attack). Some may consider this a mini-stroke, however, in reality, it is a stroke that resolved or improved functionality to the affected body part.

By definition, a TIA resolves within 24 hours, but most TIA symptoms resolve within a few minutes.

TIAs are often warning signs of a future stroke. The risk of a stroke increases dramatically in the days and weeks after a transient ischemic attack, and the TIA may offer an opportunity to find a cause and prevent the permanent neurologic damage that results because of a stroke.

Very Good Information.. I myself had a stroke 7 years ago this month at the age of 33. Although mine was brought on by a Chiropractor (Medical Malpractice) the effects can be devastating. Fortunately I have fully recovered, but the first year was very difficult. It is good for people to know what the warning signs are so that they can possibly prevent a full blown stroke later.

WOW Shelley Frody.  I am sorry to hear that, but happy now that you have fully recovered.  I did not know a Chiropracot could cause such a thing.  Good luck to you

Donald, I hope that your father remains healthy.  My late grandmother experienced several TIAs, so I am familiar with the condition.

Don, Sorry to hear about your dad.  My father in law, although no longer with us, had one of them quite a few years ago.  His mouth droppped and like your dad, within a short time his musles in his face came back.  It is scary. Just an FYI, his eventual case of death was not a future stroke.  Good luck, I know it is tough.  ~Linda

Don, I was sorry to hear of your Dad's situation. My father in the last 30 days of his life had a stroke which impaired his speech. This is not an easy time in your life. I wish you well and thank you for educating everyone on T.I.A.

Don- I am glad your dad came out of it okay.  How wonderful that you are there for him.  I used to be a registered nurse, so unfortunatly, I know too much about that sort of thing.  We had a resident one time who had a stroke at age 28!  He pulled through fine.

Sorry to hear of your fathers TIA. My grandfather had two massive strokes and has never been the same. My poor grandmother is the primary caregiver and it has been increasingly hard to care for such a different man then the one she married 51 years ago. They are both is their late 60's. I wish there was more education and resources for families and caregivers dealing with stroke recovery patients. We have been through so much over the past two years as a family. TIA and strokes are very difficult to deal with, especially when they are so unpredictable. I hope everything is working out and it will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing I think this is a very important issue to discuss.
