Blogging: Substance or Quantity?

By
Real Estate Agent with Aksland Real Estate

Blogging is quickly becoming America's National Pasttime.  I even think that it is passing up baseball for that honor. Everyone who is anyone has a blog.  The more you blog, the more reputable you become.  Should this be the case?  I think not.  Blogs should be of substance.  The better quality blog that you produce, the more comments that you should acquire. As a Realtor, blogs should be geared toward people that would be visiting your website.  One mistake I have noticed with many posts is that they are only posted on Active Rain and are not utilizing Localism.  Localism is a great area that consumers read to learn more about properties and areas. In addition it can help them buy or sell property in your area (mine is Modesto) You need to be the expert in your area, that informs people.  As a consumer, what would you like to read? Lots of posts that have minimal quality, or one nice post that is full of detail and useful information?  The choice is yours!

I guess you can look at it a few ways. For me I blog for business. I understand the importance or marketing on the internet. With that in mind page ranking is key. I do not have a unlimited ad budget. Blogging helps page rank

SEO is only part of what I blog for.   A big part, but only a part!  I do agree with you that a person's blog should be something of substance.  That substance might just be bringing a smile to someone's face, but it should be at least worth that person's time for having read it!

Matthew Great Points! I do agree that blogs have to have a meaning. There are so many blogs out there that are just based on getting points. It is our responsibility to educate, edify and inspire both the public and ourselves!

I see blogs on here by people that are nothing more than an announcement that they had a turkey sandwich for lunch and they have 1,296 views and 200 comments amounting to nothing more than 'oooooh, turkey. Yum. Obviously the points mean way more to some than content so you just have to weed through this chaff. Too bad. But there is a ton of great stuff on here once you find it.

Matthew, I have a sense as a reader I want substance AND quality, plus something that is not too long in an article. I am amazed how long (number of words) people write. Who has time to read all that? Posting to Localism, I agree is important.

I hate the ones that go on forever.  My ADHD gets the best of me and I get bored.

I'm all about posting to Localism, and then I try and break the monotony with an occasional members only post.  I don't think my turkey sandwiches are that interesting yet.  But I tend to get carried away with my posts and spend way too much time making them look all pretty.... oh well.

Short and sweet. Frequent. Substantive. Interesting. Funny. Breaking news. Long and detailed. Somber, but necessary. All of these will work. I'm just getting on here and beginning blogging. I find it has worked for web presence, and it is also a way for me to educate myself about real estate and force myself to write about the city i live in. The more i write, or try to research, the more i understand, intimately, the place i live in.

Those who are here just for the points will get bored soon and will die off. Those who are here to get wet will stick around!

I agree with all of you. The long blogs tend to bore me very quickly, which is why I try to keep it to the point. In addition, I agree with Jeff in that people who just want points will learn very quickly or get bored of it and move on to the next best thing.

My latest thought is, how soon will blogs bloat the seo world and google and the other search engines will have to start ignoring them?  I guess when that happens the blogs that actually have quality content and not just quantity will still be around and most others will drop out.

Matthew,

Blogs should have valuable content for the reader to make it produce desired results, that is the customer contacting you about mortgages or buying or selling homes. That's about the only way to draw them to your blog and impress them with your knowledge.
