I just got finished reading an article on Green Real Estate by Forbes. The article was primarily about green real estate, real estate that is built to be environmentally friendly. Green meaning that the home is built to minimize its carbon footprint on the earth which would reduce the amount of carbon dioxide gas contributing to global warming. Some of the building design techniques are solar, recycled rainwater, solar chimneys, rooftop gardens, natural ventilation and more.

After reading this article I would say that San Diego could really use this new green technology in its new home building industry and refitting of existing homes. San Diego is a great place to use solar and recycled water. We're already doing this but not on a big enough scale. I personally only use my air conditioning about 1 month out of the year - if that. I heat my home in the evenings for about 2 months out of the year. If my home was green I could really save money and have a smaller carbon footprint.

I am not quite on the band wagon of global warming but I have always been conscious of polluting and a clean environment with clean air. I think if we can use less energy "fossil fuels" I think it's a good idea. I also think that much of the global warming phenomenon is making people conscious of the environment but lacks real alternatives. I have always been a huge supporter of nuclear energy and not burning fossil fuels. The problem is the environmentalists don't want nuclear or to burn fossil fuels which leaves us with no real alternatives for now. I think if we embraced nuclear energy and used electric cars that plugged into our homes outlets that got their energy from nuclear power plants it would make the best sense until we find safer energy alternatives.

Welcome to AR! You will love it here.

This is my favorite part: global warming phenomenon is making people conscious of the environment but lacks real alternatives.

I too am not all on board with the global warming. It is nice to find a few people that aren't afraid to say it as well.

Great Post!

Brian,

Thanks for the welcome.

Charlene,

I'm not afraid of doing my part "what's right for the environment" just not sure what that means other than to be smart about keeping it clean and using fewer resources. I'm all for following a good cause but I also don't believe in following a good cause blindly or for unclear motives. Saying how I really feel about a subject or issue and not going along with the group for the sake of "not making waves or the want of being excepted" would not be living a life in integrity with myself. That I can't do. I think there's still a few of us out there they havn't cracked yet. Thanks for stopping by and the support.

John,

I'll look into the EcoBroker - sounds interesting. Forbes article - http://www.forbes.com/technology/2007/04/19/green-buildings-architecture-cz_da_0420greenbuilding.html

Welcome to the community.  I used to live in San Diego while I was in the marines.  I love it there.
Do you think it would be more expensive to build these kinds of homes?

Ryan,

I would have to say that it would cost more to build this type of home. I think the benefit are the long term energy savings and using less resources of the environment. I bet you were stationed at Camp Pendleton while here in the Marines. San Diego is a great place to live - I love it here too. I have helped many Marine Families relocate to and fro San Diego. Thanks for stopping in.
